Patrick Walker of Payson will don his cap and gown this month having earned more than just his diploma. He received a distinguished award from Northern Arizona University honoring his academic performance, leadership and service to the community during his undergraduate studies.
Walker, an electronic media and film major and graduate of Payson High School, was among 20 graduating seniors receiving the university’s prestigious Gold Axe Award Nov. 17.
The tradition of the Gold Axe Award dates back to 1933, a year after the axe was adopted as the symbol for Lumberjack athletics, when NAU began awarding small gold axe pins to outstanding members of the student body.
More than 2,400 NAU seniors and graduate students will be conferred with their bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees at graduation ceremonies Dec. 17, 2010 in Flagstaff.
