Police Officers Need Integrity, High Moral Standards

Editor:

I would like to make a comment regarding a quote in the Dec. 10 issue front page article “Council upholds demotion of Lt. Garvin” where attorney Martin Bihn says “Good luck hiring police officers if this is the standard.”

I believe that for the most part we have such fine officers on the Payson Police Department. There are still people who live their lives with integrity and high moral standards and those are exactly the rare types that serve the people of Payson. Whenever the department would look to hire new officers only a small percentage would proceed past the background check and even fewer progressed past the rigorous standards to succeed as an officer of the law.

Police officers must live their lives so as not to be hypocritical in their holding citizens to the standard of the law. I want to express my faith and confidence in our police department and thank them for the service that I know they give daily — hourly — to each of us keeping us safe and responding to the sort of situations that no one wants to handle themselves and so they call the police. Next time you see an officer — I suggest you take the time to thank them for their service. They deserve it.
