The Longhorns dominated rival Show Low for three quarters on Tuesday, but then went flat and let a game they should have won get away.

Show Low broke Payson’s defensive shackles in a heartbreaking fourth quarter to snatch a 43 to 41 win from a Longhorn team that couldn’t seem to sink a basket when it counted.

The Longhorns led 38 to 27 two minutes into the fourth quarter, but then lost their edge as one of the Show Low players hit two three-pointers to change the game’s dynamic.

“We went flat,” said coach Bill Campbell. “I can’t put my finger on it — must have been poor coaching, I blame myself as much as anyone.”

The loss dropped the team to four wins and five losses for the season, but nonetheless reinforced the team’s prowess on defense. Only one team has scored 60 points on the Longhorns all season.

The Longhorns play Fountain Hills on Friday night at 7 p.m., with the junior varsity tip-off at 5:30.

On Tuesday, Tanner Hintz led the team effort, with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Guillermo Lopez contributed 9 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Zack Blazer and Cole Belcher each scored 6 points.
