A 47-year-old Glendale man killed himself Sunday morning minutes before police could stop him.
Officers found Douglas James dead from one self-inflicted bullet wound about 2:50 a.m. in the Walmart parking lot, said Payson Det. Sgt. Dean Faust.
Family members reportedly called Walmart and police because they were worried James was suicidal. James had made contact with at least one family member earlier in the day, saying he was going to kill himself.
When officers got the call, they rushed to the south side of the Walmart parking lot, however, James had killed himself in the front seat of his pickup truck minutes before they arrived, Faust said.
It is unclear how long James was talking to family before they contacted police. The family has a cabin north of town that James had visited in the past.
It is unknown if James had spent any time at the cabin Saturday, but he had been in the Payson area most of the day, Faust said.
James did not go into Walmart and no one witnessed or heard the shot.
James was reportedly dealing with “personal issues,” Faust said.
