This Christmas will be happier and less stressful for the Gunzel family. That’s because the Knights of Columbus Council, associated with St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, recently hosted mom Trina Gunzel and 7-year-old son Wyatt for a Christmas dinner and a visit with Santa Claus at a special event held at Gerardo’s Firewood Cafe.

After dinner, Santa showed up and brought Wyatt his first-ever bicycle. And after a couple turns riding his new bike in the tight confines, Wyatt and Santa watched while the Knights presented Trina with a $1,000 donation to help the Gunzel family with medical expenses associated with Wyatt’s rare Type 1 Diabetes condition.

Young Wyatt was diagnosed with this particularly demanding illness — one which requires blood sugar level monitoring and insulin shots every three hours seven days a week.

The condition is so rare that Wyatt and his folks have struggled with the demands and care. Once a month, they have to bundle up and head to a special research program at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

The local Knights Council is active in many local projects, including significant help each year to Special Olympics.
