Police Getting Funds For Equipment

The Town of Payson Police Department will get $10,361 from the Department of Justice, filtered through the Gila County Sheriff’s Office.

At the Dec. 14 meeting of the Gila County Board of Supervisors, the GCSO asked for and was given approval of an “Interlock Agreement” between the Gila County Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Payson for the Department of Justice 2010 Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program Award in the amount of $10,361.

The grant provisions make it necessary for the federal funds to come to a county before being passed along to a municipality, explained Payson Police Chief Don Engler.

Engler said the money would be used to buy equipment for canine training and the special response team.

“The canine training equipment is getting pretty worn and the guys are starting to feel some of the bites, so it’s time to replace it,” he said.
