Gila Community College in Payson will present a concert by the Mt. Vernon Chamber Players at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12. The program will be in the college’s community room and is offered to the residents of the Rim Country free of charge. The Payson GCC campus is at 201 N. Mud Springs Road. Members of the group are Cecilia Cho, piano; Anthony Arnone, cello; and Kate Hamilton, viola. The concert will feature the works of Brahms and Mozart, as well as Ralph Vaughn Williams and Zoltan Kodaly.

Monthly siren tests resume

The Pine-Strawberry Task Force would like to announce that it will be running the siren tests in both communities on a regular basis again. The first test will be at noon, Friday, Feb. 5. The test will be run each month at noon on the first Friday. Monthly testing insures that the sirens are working properly in the event they are needed in an emergency.

In the event of an emergency, the sirens will be set off and residents will be asked to tune radios into KMOG AM 1420 or KRIM FM 96.3 for further information. For more information on the sirens and other task force matters, the public is invited to attend the group’s meeting, which is at 7 p.m., the second Monday of every month at the Pine fire station.

Computer basics workshop

The Rim Country Middle School Community Involvement Team is offering a series of computer basics workshops. These hands-on workshops are designed for the novice computer user and for those with a limited understanding of the basics. The workshops begin Wednesday, Feb. 10 and will continue every Wednesday through March 24. First Friday fun

Friday, Feb. 5, is First Friday again, and visitors to the shops on historic Main Street in Payson will find lots of specials, food and fun between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. There will be chocolate at just about every shop, but for a more complete meal, visit the Community Presbyterian Church for a Romantic Breakfast Dinner with pancakes, sausage or bacon, peach cobbler and a beverage. There will also be a bake sale at the church, and live entertainment.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a benefit to help operate Tonto Natural Bridge, should the Town of Payson be able to negotiate a deal to keep the park open.

RPAP Brush Pit Schedule

This coming weekend, the Regional Payson Area Project for a Fire Wise Rim Country will only be staffing the free brush drop-off at the Blattner Pit, weather permitting.

Saturday, Feb. 6, the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson.

Tip a Teacher

Residents of the Rim Country are invited to come to Macky’s Grill between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb 6 to Tip A Teacher. Join the fun and enjoy good food, plus great service from area teachers and support the schools.

Winter Carnival for food drive

Join Woody, the Payson Area Food Drive’s official squirrel mascot, collecting food and donations for local food banks at a Winter Carnival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6 at 913 S. Ponderosa St. Please bring nonperishable food items to support the Payson Area Food Drive.

Recital scheduled

The music students of Alana Wallace invite area residents to their annual recital at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6 at the First Southern Baptist Church, 302 S. Ash St. in Payson.

Come here pianists and vocalists celebrate the progress they have made in the past year. This is a free event.

Candidate to visit

Chris Simcox, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, will be in Payson at 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6. Hosted by the Payson Tea Party, Simcox will speak and show the movie “Border” at the Crossroads Foursquare Church, 114 E. Cedar Lane. A reception will follow.

Taste of Rim Country tickets available at library

It is time to get a ticket for the popular Taste of Rim Country chefs’ competition.

This year, the event will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, March 6, and only 250 tickets are being sold. Tickets are $30 each, with 50 percent tax deductible. They may be purchased at the Payson Public Library.

Participating chefs will prepare either desserts or appetizers that best showcase their menus. So far, scheduled to participate are: Chili’s Grill & Bar, Creekside Steakhouse, Kevin DeWitt, Maggie Evans, Payson High School Culinary Club and Red Elephant Bakery.

Event proceeds will benefit library programming for the coming year.
