Donations sought for yard sale

The Northern Gila County Genealogical Society is now accepting donations for its annual Benefit Yard Sale, to be held April 23 and 24.

The society is a tax-exempt, nonprofit corporation, therefore all donations are tax deductible. Drop off donations at the Genealogy Library, 302 E. Bonita St., during regular business days and hours. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Saturday.

Star Valley council meeting

The Star Valley town council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 16 at the Town Hall, 3632 E. Highway 260.

On the agenda is ratifying action of the council from a Dec. 15 meeting that may have been in violation of the open meeting law. The council will discuss the issue and possibly vote on a proposal from LFR, Inc. to provide well date and well network optimization.

In a separate item, the council will consider entering into a contract with Tetra Tech to provide similar services.

Hayworth in Payson

Former Congressman J.D. Hayworth, who has announced a bid for the U.S. Senate, will make an appearance in Payson at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17 at Tiny’s Family Restaurant, 600 E. Highway 260. A no-host breakfast will be held at 9 a.m., with Hayworth appearing at 10 a.m.

Register for GED test space by noon Feb. 17

Space is available for GED testing on Saturday, Feb. 20. Anyone wishing to take the test must pre-register at 719 S. Beeline Highway by noon on Wednesday, Feb. 17. The cost is $65 for the complete test. Retakes are $10 per subject.

Future dates for testing in 2010 are: March 20, April 17, May 15, June 19. For further information, call (928) 472-5373.

Medal of Honor recipient visits Rim Country

The first U.S. Marine Corps recipient of the Medal of Honor, Robert O’Malley, will be hosted at a reception at the American Legion, 709 E. Highway 260, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 18.

O’Malley served in the Vietnam War. He was given the Medal of Honor for his action in Operation Starlite in which he single-handedly attacked a Viet Cong trench and helped to evacuate wounded Marines during a firefight. He went on to provide suppressive fire while his fellow Marines boarded a helicopter to withdraw, even though he was severely wounded.

Nursing applicant help

Gila Community College is offering an information session on its nursing program and its application process at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 18. The seminar is open to anyone interested in learning more about the program. The deadline to apply for the nursing program is March 1.

The evening will feature information and games geared toward building excitement for the fund-raiser that saves lives. This year’s theme is “Imagine a world with more birthdays.”

Benefit for area charities

A fund-raiser for Payson area charities will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 19.

This will be an evening of music featuring songs by Rodney Glassman, vice-mayor of Tucson, who is exploring a run for U.S. Senate. There will also be performances by local musical talent including Del Bohlmeyer, Gospel Geezers, Susan Campbell, Gail Gorry, John Landino, Shelly Wayland, Barbara Potvin and Jennifer Baltz.

McCain in Payson

Senator John McCain is hosting a Town Hall forum beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 in the Payson High School Auditorium. McCain will meet with local and county officials and representatives starting at 10 a.m. in the auditorium and at 10:45 a.m. will meet with officials from the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce. At 11:30 a.m., McCain will meet with school faculty and students and, at noon, the Town Hall meeting will start. The public is welcome to attend any or all of the meetings.

McCain, who has been Arizona’s senator for the last 24 years, is up for reelection in November.

Dog First Aid, CPR class set

Register today for the American Red Cross Dog First Aid/CPR Course, offered through the Payson Parks and Recreation Department. The course is from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Payson Police Department meeting room.

This class will cover many issues that dog owners experience with their pets. The cost to attend is $25 per person, with the option to purchase a training book and DVD. Dump the drugs

The Community Prevention Council and Southwest Behavioral Health Services are providing an opportunity to dispose of old, outdated and unused prescriptions at a Dump the Drugs day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Rim Guidance Center, 404 W. Aero Drive.

Concert planned

The First Baptist Church of Pine is hosting The Zwiebels, a husband and wife duet performing in concert during the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday, Feb. 21.

Dirk and Cheryl Zwiebel share their testimony through their instrumental and vocal music, including contemporary, traditional, country and southern gospel songs all over the country. The First Baptist Church is at 4039 N. Highway 87 in Pine.

Court clerk’s office closes for week

The Payson satellite office of the Gila County Clerk of the Superior Court will be closed from Monday, Feb. 22 through Friday, Feb. 26. The clerk’s staff will be involved in training for an updated case management system being implemented by the state.

Student Chef Event

The Culinary Arts students of Payson High School are putting on their annual Chef Event. The student will be cooking foods from all across the U.S. and serving it in the Rim Country Middle School cafeteria from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25. Inspirational program

The God is Good Ministries will host local pastor Mark Henning in a special engagement in Payson at 6 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 28 at the Payson High School auditorium. Henning will be speaking and presenting live drama set to music in his “It Is Time” program. There is no admission.
