Their work done at the regionals in Payson, teams from the 3A East are now meeting on the bigger stage of the state championships.
The boys’ state play started Monday. The girls will compete starting today, Feb. 16.
Following the 3A East Regionals in Payson, the Round Valley boys earned a 6-seed placement with its championship title; the bronze medal team, Blue Ridge garnered a 7-seed placement; and Alchesay, who took second place in the local tournament, was given a 15-seed place, just one removed from the bottom rung.
Round Valley faced Fountain Hills (No. 11) in the first round of state play Monday night. Blue Ridge was matched with Coolidge (No. 10) in the opening battle, and Alchesay went up against Safford (No. 2).
The second round of the 3A boys’ state tournament will be played at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 19.
The first two rounds of the tournament are played on the home courts of the teams with the higher seeding in the state bracketing. The semi-finals and finals will be at Jobbing.com Arena Feb. 26 and 27.
For the girls, Snowflake earned a 6-seed with its regional championship crown; Alchesay was placed at the 7-seed; Round Valley is at the 13-seed spot; and Blue Ridge is the 16-seed in the state bracketing.
Snowflake will go up against Estrella Foothills (No. 11); Alchesay will play Wickenburg (No. 10); Round Valley faces off with Winslow (No. 4); and Blue Ridge must take on Safford (No. 1).
As in the boys’ state tournament play, the first two rounds of games in state play will be on the home courts of the teams with the higher seeds in the matchups. First-round play is at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 16. The second round of play will be at 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20. The semi-finals will be played Friday, Feb. 26 and the finals Saturday, Feb. 27, both at Jobbing.com Arena.
