Spanish Classes for Kids

Certified teacher Trina Gunzel will again be teaching Spanish Classes for students.

“Fiesta Fridays” — Spanish Classes For Kids — will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. starting Feb. 19 at Arizona Photo Solutions Studio, located in the Sawmill Crossing.  Additional classes will be added, depending on Spanish levels and interest.

Relay for Life kick-off party

The American Cancer Society will host a kick-off celebration for the 2010 Payson Relay for Life at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 19 at the Payson First Church of the Nazarene.

The evening will feature information and games geared toward building excitement for the fund-raiser that saves lives. This year’s theme is “Imagine a world with more birthdays.”

Benefit for area charities

A fund-raiser for Payson area charities will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 19.

This will be an evening of music featuring songs by Rodney Glassman, vice-mayor of Tucson, who is exploring a run for U.S. Senate. There will also be performances by local musical talent including Del Bohlmeyer, Gospel Geezers, Susan Campbell, Gail Gorry, John Landino, Shelly Wayland, Barbara Potvin and Jennifer Baltz.

Rim Country residents and visitors originally from Minnesota are invited to a Minnesota Breakfast at 8:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 19 at the Crosswinds Restaurant at the Payson Airport.

Pancake/Waffle Breakfast

Payson Masonic Lodge is sponsoring an “All You Can Eat” Pancake/Waffle Breakfast with sausage or bacon, juice or coffee from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday Feb. 20. The lodge is located at 200 E. Rancho Road (behind Fire Station No. 2).

Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 10. Proceeds will fund lodge charitable activities in the Payson area.

McCain in Payson

Senator John McCain is hosting a Town Hall forum beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 in the Payson High School Auditorium. McCain will meet with local and county officials and representatives starting at 10 a.m. in the auditorium and at 10:45 a.m. will meet with officials from the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce. At 11:30 a.m., McCain will meet with school faculty and students and, at noon, the Town Hall meeting will start. The public is welcome to attend any or all of the meetings.

McCain, who has been Arizona’s senator for the last 24 years, is up for reelection in November.

Free brush pits open

The Regional Payson Area Project….for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting:

On Saturday, Feb. 20, the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson.

On Sunday, Feb. 21, the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.

All RPAP free drop-off locations are for brush, leaves, pine needles, trimmings and other vegetative materials only. No household garbage, construction debris or other items will be accepted, and use by commercial haulers is prohibited.

Dog First Aid, CPR class set

Register today for the American Red Cross Dog First Aid/CPR Course, offered through the Payson Parks and Recreation Department. The course is from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Payson Police Department meeting room.

This class will cover many issues that dog owners experience with their pets. The cost to attend is $25 per person, with the option to purchase a training book and DVD. Concert planned

The First Baptist Church of Pine is hosting The Zwiebels, a husband and wife duet performing in concert during the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday, Feb. 21.

Dirk and Cheryl Zwiebel share their testimony through their instrumental and vocal music, including contemporary, traditional, country and southern gospel songs all over the country. The First Baptist Church is at 4039 N. Highway 87 in Pine.
