The Optimists, Kiwanis, Rotary and the High School STUGO and Drama Clubs invite residents of the Rim Country to attend the Lip Sync Concert Feb. 27 at the high school auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased from members of the participating clubs and at the Payson High School Studio Theater. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students if purchased in advance. At the door, the tickets will cost $2 more. Star Valley General Plan Committee meeting

The Star Valley General Plan Committee is holding a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. to go over any last-minute changes to the general plan before it is submitted to the Planning and Zoning Commission. Peter Armenta, community development director with the Central Arizona Association of Governments, announced that the meeting agenda includes introductions, plan review and then review of changes that still need to be made.

Pine Library closed

The Isabelle Hunt Memorial Public Library in Pine will be closed Thursday, Feb. 25 through Saturday, March 6 so that new carpet can be installed.

Scholastic Book Fair at Frontier Elementary

The Scholastic Book Fair will be Feb. 25 through March 3, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day in the gym at Frontier Elementary School. In addition, Tuesday, March 2, the Book Fair will also be open from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the Family Fun Night of the Art Extravaganza, Entertainment and Dinner of Indian Fry Bread. The entertainment for the evening is jump rope, dance, recorders, guitar, choir and band groups.

At the Book Fair, you’ll find books for all ages — Accelerated Reader, books in Spanish, children’s classics, cookbooks and adult best sellers, plus a few audio books for children and adults. Cash, check or credit cards will be accepted. For details, call (928) 472-2052.

Z-Coil shoes

Come see the new Z-Coil shoes on sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27 in the main lobby of the Payson Regional Medical Center. Styles include sneakers, boots, clogs and much more.

One-day bag sale at Senior Thrift Store

The Senior Thrift Store, 512 W. Main St., will have a one-day bag sale Thursday, Feb. 25. Shoppers may fill standard-size grocery bags (which will be provided) with men’s and women’s clothing for $1 per bag. Boutique and children’s garments are not included in the sale. The store is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. All proceeds benefit the Senior Center.

Register kids now for Spring Break Recreation Program

There is still time to register your child for the Payson Parks and Recreation Spring Break Recreation Program, being held Monday through Thursday, March 8-11, from 8 a.m. to noon for children in kindergarten thru 5th grade.

This is a fantastic opportunity to keep your children safe, busy and happy over Spring Break. Children will participate in inside and outside games and sports, build crafts, and have a daily snack all under the supervision of certified teachers and their assistants.

The Culinary Arts students of Payson High School are putting on their annual Chef Event. The student will be cooking foods from all across the U.S. and serving it in the Rim Country Middle School cafeteria from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25. PEC yard sale

Payson Education Center Student Council will be holding a Yard Sale fund-raiser on from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 26 (not Feb. 27 as previously announced) in the PEC parking lot. Free day to discard appliances, metal

The Buckhead Mesa Landfill will coordinate an old appliance discard “free day” from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 27.

Refrigerators, freezers, washers, dishwashers, dryers, portable trash compactors and water heaters, as well as other metal items will be accepted. The landfill fee for the weight of all appliances and the Freon from the refrigerators and freezers will be waived by Gila County. The county will handle the Freon removal from the appliances; please do not tamper with the Freon lines and no trash of any kind in the appliances.

Free CERT training planned

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is designed to help communities prepare for effective disaster response through training and planning.

The local CERT, sponsored by the Payson Fire Department, is providing CERT training in Pine starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, March 6. The training will be presented at the LDS Church at corner of Pine Creek Road and Highway 87 in Pine. The training that CERT members receive further enhances community preparedness and through awareness it potentially mitigates damage caused as a result of disasters. Free parenting class

Parents, foster parents, grandparents and caregivers who want to learn simple and practical tips for raising children of all ages are encouraged to attend free Common Sense Parenting training in Payson Feb. 27 and March 6. This is a two-part program at Mountain Bible’s building C, 302 E. Rancho Road.

The training runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, with a one-hour break for lunch. Sorry, no children will be allowed in the training, but childcare may be arranged. For more information, call Kelli at (928) 232-7149.

Health screening for children

The Gila County Health Department will have free developmental, hearing and vision screening on Feb. 27. Appointments are necessary; call (928) 402-8813 or toll free 800-304-4452, ext 8813.

For children from birth to age 5, a parent or guardian must be present during testing. Participants will receive free incentives. The Gila County Health Department is at 107 W. Frontier St., Suite A in Payson.

Saturday bag sale

Select from hundreds of clothes, shoes, belts and anything else you wear (except for jewelry) that can fit into one of the Almost New Thrift Shop bags and take it home for just one dollar. The next Almost New Thrift Shop $1 Bag Sale will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 27. Proceeds help support the health scholarship fund and the many other programs put on by the Mogollon Health Alliance Auxiliary.

Benefit barbecue

A benefit barbecue is planned for Michelle Vanderbyl at the Butcher Hook in Tonto Basin. Vanderbyl operates the Leather & Lace Salon in Tonto Basin and is battling cancer.

The benefit will include a barbecue meal for $5 per plate, music from DJ Craig, games, a 50/50 drawing, a horseshoe tournament and a shuffleboard tournament. The barbecue gets started at noon; sign-up for the horseshoe tournament starts at 12:30 p.m., with play beginning at 1 p.m.; sign-up for shuffleboard starts at 3:30 p.m., with play at 4 p.m. All fees and any extra donations that can be made will be used to help Vanderbyl with her living expenses so she can focus her energy on recovering her health.

Those who can’t come to Tonto Basin for the event, but would like to contribute, can call (928) 479-2142 for details.
