The annual Black & White Ball is Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino. The formal event raises funds to help Rim Country dialysis patients with costs for their health care and treatment not covered by insurance. Presented by the Mogollon Health Alliance, the cost is $200 per person or $1,500 for a table. Doors open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 5:45 p.m. Music for dancing will be provided by the Sonoran Swing Band. There will be contests, gifts for every guest and a drawing for a 14-karat white gold and diamond ladder necklace donated by Payson Jewelers. For more information, contact the MHA at (928) 472-2588.

Learn about waterfowl

The Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department is offering a unique seminar provided by the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Migratory Game Bird Supervisor, Mike Rabe, on waterfowl natural history and identification. The class will include a slideshow and presentation, followed by identification of waterfowl in Green Valley Park.

Participants should bring binoculars if they have them, but extras will be available. Space is limited, so register today. Registration is open through Jan. 12. The class is from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 19. It is open to all ages. The fee is $5 per person.

Payson Schools schedule Half-Day In-service

Payson Unified School District 10 will observe a half-day in-service day Wednesday, Jan. 13. Julia Randall, Payson and Frontier Elementary Schools dismiss at 11:45 a.m. Lunch will be served to students before they depart. Rim Country Middle School dismisses at 12:30 p.m. after serving lunch. Payson High School dismisses at 12:05 p.m. without serving lunch, followed by a brief, optional club period. The RCMS/PHS buses depart from the schools at 12:35 p.m.

Payson Center for Success High School does not observe the half-day in-services and will operate on its regular schedule.

Bereavement workshop series this month

A bereavement workshop series, presented by Hospice Compassus and hosted by Good Samaritan Society Majestic Rim, 310 E. Tyler Parkway is scheduled. There will be two different workshops in January.

Workshop 1 is on “Coping with Loss —Early Stages of Grief” and is set for 4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Workshop 2, “Coping with Loss — When Will I Get Through This?” will be at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Both will be held at Good Samaritan Society Majestic Rim, 310 E. Tyler Parkway. Reserve a seat by calling (928) 474-3912.

GED testing

Space is available for GED testing Saturday, Jan. 16. Anyone wishing to take the test must pre-register by Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 719 S. Beeline Highway. The cost is $65 for the complete test, and retakes are $10 per subject. Testing will also take place on Feb. 20, March 20, April 17, May 15 and June 19.

Vaccination Fair set

The Gila County Health Department will be conducting Influenza Vaccination Fair in Payson Jan. 14 at the Gila County Health Department, 107 W. Frontier, Suite A, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Novel H1N1 vaccination will be offered at no charge to everyone 6 months of age and older. The seasonal flu vaccination will also be available to everyone 6 months of age and older. Everyone 18 years old and under can receive the vaccine free, it is also covered under Medicare Part B. There is a charge of $30 for all others.

A free raffle will be conducted for those who receive a flu vaccination at one of these clinics. All prizes are donated by local businesses.

Gubernatorial hopeful to speak at Denny’s

The Payson Tea Party Sons and Daughters of Liberty will host gubernatorial hopeful Bruce Olsen, Conservative Libertarian, at its Jan. 14 meeting at Denny’s of Payson. The meeting is at 6 p.m.

Land exchange meeting

A Montezuma Castle Land Exchange Citizen Participation Meeting is set for 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 15 at Payson Public Library, 328 N. McLane Road.

Deadline to enter Lip Sync Contest is Jan. 15

The Rim Country Optimists’ annual Lip Sync Concert is Feb. 27 at Payson High School. The deadline for entries is Jan. 15.

This event is sponsored through the cooperative effort of Kiwanis, Rotary, Optimists, the PHS Drama Club and the PHS student government. Students will be competing for a total of $1,000 in prizes.

It will include an amazing silent auction and a 50-50 raffle. Tickets are now being sold by club members at a discounted price prior to the event. As this event’s proceeds are for scholarships for continuing education, we continue to accept auction and monetary donations.

The Rim Valley Church of God will host Larry Ahlborn in concert at 6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 17. Ahlborn is a songwriter, musician and singer. He has recorded many CDs and DVDs. Ahlborn is a blind musician who plays and signs with audience participation.

Business Buzz

The January Business Buzz, presented by the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Gila County Economic Development Corporation, will focus on Payson’s transportation future. There will be a presentation and interactive discussion about Payson’s transportation issues and solutions by Dianne Kresich with the Arizona Department of Transportation’s multimodal planning division. Topics will include: traffic flows through the Town of Payson and vehicular circulation challenges in and around the community; the options and realities for the future; and how Payson’s businesses be affected.

The program is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 19 at Tiny’s Restaurant, 600 E. Highway 260. It is free to business representatives with a no-host lunch ordered from Tiny’s menu. Reserve a seat by calling (928) 474-4515.
