If town recreation programs remain in tact following a budget meeting today, Jan. 12, it’s now time for the Rim Country’s Steve Nash hopefuls to begin gearing up for the upcoming adult basketball league.
The urgency is because registration for the 2010 season is now open and will wrap up Feb. 1.
However, there are those around the community and in town government wondering if some recreational programs might be cut today due to severe budget constraints.
“It’s up in the air,” said town sports coordinator Joseph Harris. “We’ll know after the meeting.”
If the long-popular league remains on the town sports and recreation calendar, league play begins Feb. 15 and continues for two months with each team playing about two games per week in old Payson High School gymnasium.
Players must be 18 years of age and out of high school to participate. The entry fee is $300 per team.
Harris’ plans are to again host recreational and competitive divisions if at least 12 teams register for play. A 30-years-plus division will be formed only if a minimum four teams agree to compete.
For more information, visit the P&R offices located at Green Valley Park, call Harris at (928) 474-5242, ext. 7, or log on to the Web site: www.ci.payson.az.us.

Question of the week
Do you think new Principal Anna Van Zile has a valid idea in eliminating the Asst. Principal and replacing it with an Athletic Director position that would share her duties as Principal?
