Exceptional athlete has roots in Tonto Village

When I typed the date for my column, it brought to mind the controversy of whether to say two thousand ten or twenty-ten. What is your choice?
I would guess that most people will go for the shortest version. I know that there are more important issues out there, like a big shortfall in Arizona’s budget, but this issue is a bit interesting.
It is mind-boggling to realize that half of the month of January is already gone. Another thought, tax time is just three months away! That brings to mind of gathering information for the IRS. What a hassle! But it is a necessary evil.
A few weeks ago, the Payson Roundup ran a feature article on Ridge Halenar. Ridge is an exceptional athlete and played for Payson High School. Ridge’s family was not mentioned nor his grandparents. Ridge’s parents are Mikie and Bob Halenar and his grandparents are Tonto Village residents, Chuck and Linda Stailey.
Athleticism runs in the family, Ridge’s sister Rylee also is quite outstanding at just about all sports at Payson High School.
Needless to say, his parents and grandparents are truly proud of Ridge’s accomplishments, and his career in the ROTC program along with being a student of the University of North Dakota, will prove to be a great addition to the sports programs at the university.
Anniversaries
I need to make a correction on Phon and Dara’s wedding anniversary. The true date is Jan. 12 instead of Jan. 13. They have been together for 30 years and have spent many of those years in Bear Flat.
Tonto Village III residents Joan and Gary Norem will celebrate 20 years of marriage on Jan. 20. Both Joan and Gary are a great help to the Hellsgate Fire Department and their auxiliary the Fireflies. Their help is invaluable on the days that the Fireflies put on their fund-raisers in May and September. Congratulations to both couples.
The Tonto Village Domestic Water Improvement District has had a resignation of one of its board members and the vacancy needs to be filled to carry on the business of the board.
If you are interested in filling this vacancy, contact Administrative Assistant Linda Stailey at (928) 478-4641 for more information. The term would run until the next election of the board in November.
Former Tonto Village Fire Chief J.R. Alliger is now at home after a long illness and a long stay in the hospital in the Valley. He is still recuperating but he can receive visitors and phone calls. Call him first, at 951-2084 if you plan to visit with him. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Pool results
The Double D pool tables on Tuesday evening were busy with the gals playing their weekly game of nine-ball. The winners were Melissa Janssen, Payge Fieriera and Kara Shaw. Congratulations to all the winners.
