The series of three storms that swept over Arizona this week is wreaking havoc on Payson High School sports.
Crucial East Region showdowns set for Jan. 20 vs. Alchesay in Wilson Dome were postponed and rescheduled for Jan. 27. Start times remain the same.
Although the Payson Invitational Wrestling Tournament set to tip off today, Jan. 22 and continue tomorrow has not been postponed or canceled at press time, athletic director Jason Lobik said there are concerns that some of the teams entered, especially Durango Colo., Flagstaff Coconino and Blue Ridge, might not make it or if they do, the teams would have difficulty returning home due to snow, hazardous traveling conditions and closed highways and roads.
Lobik also expressed his concerns about the boys and girls basketball teams traveling today to Lakeside-Pinetop for East clashes against the Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets.
If the storm renders travel on SR 260 too dangerous for school buses, those games would be rescheduled, Lobik said.
The postponements are occurring at a crucial time on the wrestling and basketball teams’ schedule.
With the basketball regional tournament set to begin Feb. 3 and the East regional wrestling tournament slated for Feb. 6, time is short to make up games.
Also postponed because of weather was the wrestling team’s annual benefit spaghetti dinner. It was originally scheduled for last evening, Jan. 21, but was postponed until Jan. 28.
The times, 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the place, Rim Country Middle School cafeteria, remain the same. Tickets are available from any PHS wrestler or at the door. They are $6 per person or $20 for a family.
