The Hashknife Pony Express riders come to town Wednesday, Jan. 27. The Hashknife Gang will ride down from Holbrook to the Payson Post Office to make a mail pick-up at 4:45 p.m. The Pony Express dinner will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino.

Coffee with CASA

The Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program will have an open house from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 27 at the CASA office, 714 S. Beeline Highway, Ste. 201.

The purpose of the open house is to provide those interested with information about volunteering as a child advocate and the impact they can have for a child in foster care. There will be free coffee and treats courtesy of Scoops.

Bereavement workshop

The bereavement workshop series presented by Hospice Compassus will have Workshop 2, “Coping with Loss — When Will I Get Through This?” at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 27 at Good Samaritan Society Majestic Rim, which is hosting the program. Guerilla Tactics 2010

The Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Gila County Small Business Development Center will again offer their popular “Guerilla Tactics” programs.

This year, the programs will focus on the development, creation and optimization of Web sites.

The programs will be held at the Central Arizona Board of Realtors meeting room, 600 E. Highway 260, Ste H, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. the last Wednesday of the month, January through June. The faculty for the event will be Michael Rose and Cameron Davis. The cost for the six sessions is $50 for chamber members and $60 for nonmembers. The meetings are as follows:

• Jan. 27 - Introduction & Planning the Web Site

• Feb. 24 - How to effectively create and optimize your website

• March 24 - Search engine optimization linking strategies

• April 28 - Attracting the online customer

• May 26 - How to drive traffic to your website

• June 23 - Quantifying the measure of success

These sessions will be taped for later downloading. Register at the chamber or online at www.rimcountrychamber.com. The class will be limited to 50 participants due to space.

PHS plays

The Payson High School drama department will present one-act plays at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 27 and 28, at Payson High School auditorium.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and students in the first through 12th grades, and $3 for students wearing purple and gold.

Voter registration

The Gila County Recorder’s Office will be holding voter registration drives from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Jan. 28 at the Star Valley Circle K, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 28 at Star Valley Town Hall.

If you are not a registered voter, have moved or would like to change your party preference, please come and see us. Remember, the last day to register to vote in the March 9 town elections is Feb. 8. For more information, call (928) 402-8731.

Chamber Mixer rescheduled

The Chamber Mixer scheduled for Jan. 21 at the Payson Public Library has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 28. Sponsored by the Library Friends of Payson, the cost is $3 for chamber members and $5 for others.

Open house at Payson Education Center

The Payson Education Center cordially invites all interested parties to attend an open house from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28. Light refreshments will be served.

PEC is an alternative high school serving students in Payson and surrounding areas. It is located at 112 W. Cedar Lane. For more information, call Principal Peggy Miles at 468-8509.

Coats of many colors

A campaign is underway for used coats and socks that are clean and in good condition. This collection is to benefit less fortunate children of all ages. Drop-off points are at the Payson Galleria, The Sock Room and Appliances Plus.

Charity 5k race Jan. 30

The Payson High School National Honor Society is sponsoring a charity 5K race for the community Jan. 30. It will begin in the high school parking lot at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. The entry fee is a nonperishable food item.

Book sale

Weather keeping you inside? Why not curl up on your couch in front of your fireplace or heater with a book?

Same ol’ books at home? Come to a book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 in the log building on the Mount Cross property located at 601 E. Highway 260 between Safeway and Giant. There are a good variety of books available, and the proceeds from the sale will help to fund an Eagle project (building bookcases for one of the elementary school libraries).

Chili and Pie Dinner

Members of Ponderosa Chapter 64, Order of the Eastern Star, will once again be cooking up their famous Chili and Pie Dinner from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Masonic Lodge, 200 E. Rancho Road.

The menu will feature regular and vegetarian chili as well as potato soup for those who are not up to eating spicy food. There will also be corn bread, a tossed salad, coffee or tea and, of course, pie for dessert.  There will also be whole pies for sale, following the dinner.

The donation for this meal will be $8 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

Art and Wanda Peace in concert Sunday

First Southern Baptist Church of Payson is excited to announce Art and Wanda Peace will be returning to Payson for the evening service. Art and Wanda Peace Ministries is an interdenominational Christian evangelistic and music ministry.

Art and Wanda have written over 50 songs, recorded five projects, and sing with the top names in Southern Gospel and Christian Country music. They have appeared on the Trinity Broadcasting Network and have performed in Branson, Mo.

Please join us at the 6 p.m. service Sunday, Jan. 31. First Southern Baptist Church is located at 302 S. Ash, on the corner of Bonita and Colcord.
