In the Tuesday, June 22 issue of the Roundup, the Payson Unified School District Board president was quoted as saying, “Not everybody goes to college ... I don’t want us to gear our whole program to college because only 20 percent are going.”
On the contrary, our school programs should be 100 percent geared toward college! In the past, it was possible to obtain successful careers in a variety of fields without first obtaining a college education. Times have drastically changed. With a multitude of applicants competing for very few positions, the importance of a college degree has now become a “no-brainer.”
We must not be content with the current trend, but instead make every change necessary to ensure the remaining 80 percent are prepared and eager to attend college.
