Young writers invited

Every Friday at the Payson Public Library there is a creative writing workshop for children. Those in the first through fifth grades meet from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Young Adults room; those in the sixth through 12th grades meet from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the same part of the library.

Dinner theater premiers

A dinner theater will premier in Payson tonight, Friday, July 9. Join Payson’s Humor Me Theater Troupe at 6 p.m. at MoJoe’s Café, 305 W. Main St., for dinner and a show for just $15 per person.

A new performance will be presented each Friday, except for First Friday, at the café.

Payson Farmers Market

The Payson Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday through October. It is at Sawmill Crossing on Beeline Highway, in front of the movie theater and behind Chili’s Restaurant.

Democratic headquarters plans grand opening

There will be a grand opening celebration for the Payson Headquarters of the Democratic Club of Northern Gila County and the Gila County Democratic Party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, July 10.

The headquarters are at 307 S. Beeline Highway, next to Domino’s Pizza and Famous Sam’s Restaurant on the east side, behind KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken).

Help celebrate and plan the election cycle for the 2010 Democratic leadership.

July at the Payson Library

On Saturday, July 10 the Spy Club Book Club for children 8 and older meets at the Payson Public Library. From noon to 1 p.m. in the meeting room, there will be book talks, games and pizza.

Winning with Women of Arizona political gathering

The women of the Rim Country are invited to join a warm, friendly, unique, comfortable gathering: Winning with Women of Arizona from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, July 10 in Pine.

Scheduled to attend are Sydney Hay, candidate for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District; Senator Sylvia Allen, seeking reelection to Arizona Senate; Brenda Barton, Arizona House candidate for Legislative District 5; and Shawnna Bolick, Arizona House candidate for Legislative District 11.

Shop Hop in Pine

Visit a variety of shops in Pine, along Highway 87 and Hardscrabble Road, as the community enjoys its monthly Shop Hop from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, July 10. Many participating shops offer special sales and several will have refreshments available.

Visit Zane Grey Cabin site

The Northern Gila County Historical Society is holding a special evening event at the site of the original Zane Grey Cabin from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, July 10. The evening includes a picnic supper, live entertainment and a special gift for each guest.

Concert Under the Stars

Junction 87 will perform at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 10 on the bandstand in the amphitheater of Green Valley Park. The group was voted 2010 Best Local Music Group in the Payson Roundup’s Best of the Rim Country survey. It is a local, hard-working country band that rocks out.

Vendors begin selling at 6 p.m. There is no admission for the concert, but bring a lawn chair or blanket as seating is limited to a few picnic tables and benches.

Jazz in July

Rim residents and visitors have two opportunities to get a jazz fix in July, courtesy of the Payson Jazz Trio with some help by guest guitarist John Darst of Show Low.

This weekend, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, July 11, the Payson Jazz Trio and Darst will perform at Payson Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St.

This is the regular performance in the monthly jazz series at the church, presented by the Payson Friends of Jazz and the Community Presbyterian Church, which will soon be entering its ninth year.

The Payson Jazz Trio includes Bob Smolenski on piano, Mike Buskirk on bass and Gerry Reynolds on drums.

The concert is open to the public, with a $5 donation suggested to help defray costs.

The Payson Jazz Trio and Darst will perform as part of the Concert Under the Stars series at Green Valley Park’s amphitheater later in the month. In fact, the group will close the 2010 series with a performance from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, July 24. There is no charge and dancing is encouraged.

Blood drive Monday

Payson’s Summer Community Blood Drive is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday July 12 at the Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church, 507 W. Wade Lane.

Book discussion

East West Exchange, 100 N Tonto St., Ste. 102, Payson, will host a book discussion on Marianne Williamson’s “A Woman’s Worth” on Mondays, beginning July 12 and continuing through Aug. 30.

In the book, Williamson explores the crucial role of women in the world today. Cutting across class, race, religion and gender, “A Woman’s Worth” speaks powerfully and persuasively to a generation in need of healing and in search of harmony.

Gold, silver and jewelry appraisal planned

The Gold and Silver Extravaganza will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 13 and Wednesday, July 14 at the Majestic Mountain Inn, 602 E. Highway 260, Payson. The presenters will offer free appraisals for — and in most cases offer to buy — jewelry, gold, silver, coins, diamonds and watches.

Special quilting program

The Shoofly Quilters are presenting a special, limited-seating program with internationally renowned quilt artist Gina Perkes Tuesday, July 13.

The program will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with seating for only 200 at the Mount Cross Lutheran Church, 601 E. Highway 260, Payson. Tickets are $32.50 per person and include an inspirational lecture and presentation by Perkes, a trunk show, a question and answer session, catered lunch and door prizes.

Kirkpatrick staff in Payson

Staff members for the office of Representative Ann Kirkpatrick will be hosting open office hours in Payson from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, July 13 at the Board of Supervisors Office, 610 E. Highway 260, Payson.

Police K-9 demonstration to show dogs’ talent

For 18 years, police dogs, handlers and trainers from all over the United States and Canada have come to Payson for the annual K-9 Officer Survival Seminar. From 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, July 13, at the Payson Event Center, 1400 S. Beeline Highway, officers will put on a public demonstration that shows off the talent of these incredible dogs.

The Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association will collect donations at the event to help sponsor this annual training.
