Tonto National Forest officials announced today an area closure to provide for public and firefighter safety during the Turkey fire currently being managed near Young. The fire is currently at 17 acres. The closure went into effect today at 8 am.
The closure begins at the intersection of State Highway 288 and FS Road 609 and follows this course:
FS Road 609 is closed west from State Highway 288 to FS Road 486.
FS Road 486 is closed south from FS Road 609 to FS Road 2747.
FS Road 2747 is closed east from FS Road 486 along the bottom of the Turkey Creek drainage and continuing on FS Road 2752.
State Highway 288 will remain open. This road closure may impact through traffic along FS Road 609 for motorists intending to travel to State Highway 288 via FS Road 71 from Tonto Basin.
Area closures prohibit going into or being within the area, which is closed for the protection of public health and safety. Being on any forest roads or trails or camping within the closure area is also prohibited. Exceptions include residents who live within the closure area or their invitees and government officials in the performance of official duties.
These prohibitions will remain in effect until rescinded. Current forest-wide fire restrictions remain in effect.
“These closures are needed to protect forest users, visitors, firefighters, structures and natural resources until firefighters contain this fire,” said Tonto National Forest Deputy Fire Staff Officer Helen Graham. “Other areas of the Tonto National Forest remain open for recreation activity, including campsites and recreation sites throughout the forest and all the Salt River system lakes.”
“We continue to emphasize practicing extreme caution in all fire practices, such as making campfires. Make sure that campfires are absolutely out before departing your area.”
“Dead out,” emphasized Graham.
Violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
