Sudden Death Shocks Community

Former Payson High School three-sport star Mike Barr died July 14 at 25 years of age.

At the time of his death, Barr and his former Longhorn football teammate Adam Munson were working in California.

Details are sketchy and the cause of death is unknown until an autopsy is completed.

Barr is the son of longtime Payson Police officer Les Barr.

Payson Police secretary Charlene Hunt said the entire force has been rocked by news of the death.

Barr graduated from PHS in 2004 after starring in football, basketball, and track and field.

Some consider him the finest athlete to ever attend PHS.

At 6 feet, 7 inches and 230 pounds, he was a menacing force on the gridiron and basketball floor.

His senior season he won the Class 4A Grand Canyon Region shot put and discus championships.

He earned numerous postseason accolades, including all-region and all-state, in all three sports and was a four-year varsity letter winner in basketball.

He also won titles in the town-sponsored home run derby and 3-on-3 basketball tournaments.

As word of his untimely death rippled through Payson, former teammates, classmates and coaches recalled the gentle giant who was greatly respected and a good friend to all.

An account has been set up at National Bank of Arizona in Payson to help the family defray funeral costs.
