Mount Cross Lutheran Church invites students and teachers in the community to attend services Sunday, July 25 to have their school backpacks blessed for the coming school year. This has become an ongoing tradition at Mount Cross and is offered at the 8:30 a.m. traditional service as well as the 10:30 a.m. contemporary service. Mount Cross is located at 601 E. Highway 260, just east of Safeway.

July 23 Friday

• Payson Public Library: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Pine Library: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Rim Country Museum: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., 700 Green Valley Pkwy.

• Pine/Strawberry Museum: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Pine Community Center

• Bowling to benefit DARE: 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Rim Country Lanes

• Candidate forums: 4 p.m. at Gila Community College campus, Payson

Bowling to benefit DARE

Rim Country Lanes and the Payson Police Department have combined forces for the 6th Annual “Say No To Drugs, Say Yes To Bowling” program. The proceeds will benefit the DARE program, with 50 cents from each paid game going to support DARE.

The bowling will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, July 23. Payson Police DARE officers Sgt. Jason Hazelo and Matt Zimmerman will be present to cheer on the bowlers.

The program provides students with a fun, supervised activity. Last year there were 564 participants and a donation of $441 was made to the DARE program.

Candidate forums

Gila Community College is hosting two evenings of candidate forums.

The U.S. Senate candidate forum will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, July 23, followed at 7 p.m. by the U.S. Congressional District 1 forum.

There will be a 90-minute break between the forums. In Globe, the break will be in the form of a mixer where students and the general public can mingle with the candidates. In Payson, the break will be filled by the political parties.

The Arizona State Senate District 5 candidate forum will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, July 24, followed at 5:15 p.m. by the Arizona State Representative District 5 candidate forum. As the evening before, there will be a mixer at the Gila Pueblo Campus in Globe at 6:15 p.m.

The forums will originate at the Gila Community College Gila Pueblo Campus in Globe, with the Payson and San Carlos campuses participating via ITV. The forums will be interactive with questions taken from the audiences in Globe, Payson and San Carlos.

Brush Pit Schedule

This coming weekend, the Regional Payson Area Project… for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting:

• Saturday, July 24 the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson.

• Sunday, July 25, the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.

All RPAP free drop-off locations are for brush, leaves, pine needles, trimmings and other vegetative materials only. Properly bagged Yellow Starthistle, or other listed noxious weed species will also be accepted and will be burned. No household garbage, construction debris, or other items will be accepted.

Payson Farmers Market

The Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday. There is a bounty of fresh-picked produce and a large variety of artisan foods to round out any meal. Two resident chefs will demonstrate how to create great appetizers from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday, July 24.

Monument Peak hike

Join Parks and Recreation hiking instructors for a Payson Area Trails System Group-Led Hike on the Monument Peak Loop Trail at 8 a.m., Saturday, July 24.

Participants will meet at the Monument Peak Loop Trailhead, which is approximately 3.3 miles east of Highway 260 on Granite Dells Road. The hike is three miles long and is easy hiking, with a mostly crushed granite trail surface and only a few inclines. Expect a little seasonal water on the trail. This is a free event to the public. Don’t forget your hiking boots and water.

Concert Under the Stars

The final Concert Under the Stars for 2010 is at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 24 at Green Valley Park’s amphitheater. The Payson Jazz Trio will perform.

Gospel concert Sunday at Star Valley Southern Baptist

Rim Country residents and visitors are invited to attend Ozarks in Concert — Pure Gospel Music at 6 p.m., Sunday, July 25 at the Star Valley Southern Baptist Church, 4180 E. Highway 260, Star Valley.
