Garden Flourishing After Recent Rainfall

This past Monday morning, a loud clap of thunder just about landed me on the floor. The thunder was so loud and sounded especially loud hearing it from a sound sleep at about 5 a.m. It sounded like it was right overhead!

The rain this past week has been absolutely delightful. Our garden in particular has enjoyed the extra moisture. The plants are shooting up almost as fast as the weeds. Rain totals for Tonto Village have come in unofficially at nearly one inch of rain for the past two rainfalls. Bear Flat rain totals have reached .96 inches for the same time period. Mead and Collins Ranch have recorded 1.47 inches of rain for the month of July.

Hellsgate Fire Department

At the last fire board meeting on July 14 at the Star Valley station, years of service by the firefighters were recognized. Chief Gary Hatch has accumulated 28 years of service, followed by Captain Rick Heron, 15 years, Captain Doug Blazer, 11 years, firefighter Matt Highstreet, 8 years, and engineer Jeff Younkens, 5 years. A huge thank you to all the firefighters who were recognized. The Hellsgate residents appreciate your expertise and your compassion and your dedication to serve your community.

Domino Divas

The Divas are still going strong every Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the fire station in Tonto Village. There has been a full table just about every time this summer. The gals have such a great time together, eating great potluck dishes, trying to solve the world’s problems and of course the game itself, which most times is “chicken foot.”

A few years ago, the Domino Divas and the Christopher Creek gals decided on an annual competition “Duel of the Dominoes.” This year the duel will take place Wednesday, Aug. 18 in Christopher Creek at the Christopher Creek Bible Church on the hill next to the fire station. The fun starts at 1 p.m. with a potluck. Everyone is encouraged to bring along a recipe for the dish that you bring. Mark your calendars for this enjoyable and sometimes noisy event. There are some gals that get pretty excited about winning a game!

Get well

Virginia “Ginny” Rankhorn of Tonto Village I has recently come back home after a heart surgery operation. Ginny now has a pacemaker to help her heart function normally again. Ginny’s address is 189 W. Standage Drive, Payson, AZ 85541, if you would like to send her a note of encouragement and to have a speedy recovery. Our prayers are with you, Ginny.

Birthdays, anniversaries

On July 26, Dick Watson of Tonto Village I will celebrate 76 years of birthdays. Dick has been one of the longest residents in the Village and knows just about everyone. Dick is deacon of the Tonto Village Chapel and is also a retired math teacher from the Payson Unified School District and a member of the Payson Choral Society.

Charlene “Charlie” Martin now lives in Dewey, Ariz., but was a resident of Tonto Village III for a number of years. She was also a music director for the Christopher Creek LDS Church and an avid domino player. Charlie will celebrate her birthday on July 27. Charlie has made many friends while living in the Village, and we all wish her a happy birthday.

Dick and Marilyn Lamb of Kohl’s Ranch will celebrate 53 years of marriage July 27. What a milestone! Your life together is an inspiration. Marilyn is also a Domino Diva.

Chuck and Linda Stailey of Tonto Village II will also celebrate their anniversary on July 27. Chuck and Linda share 39 years together. Most of those years have been spent in Tonto Village. They both have contributed greatly to the welfare of the community for many years. Happy anniversary! Linda is also a Domino Diva.

Nine-ball tournament

Last Tuesday evening at the Double D Bar and Restaurant, the gals from Christopher Creek and the Village played their weekly competition at the pool tables. The winners were Ethel Cain followed by Nanci Olson of Christopher Creek shooting for second place and Melissa “Mel” Williams taking third place. Congratulations to the winners.
