The Arizona Game and Fish Department invites the public to get a first look at the proposed 2011 spring hunt recommendations for turkey, javelina, buffalo and bear regulations at a series of open houses beginning July 27.

“These open houses are an opportunity for the public to preview the proposed hunt recommendations before they are presented to the Game and Fish Commission,” said Chief of Game Management, Brian Wakeling. “While there is no formal presentation given, a knowledgeable staff person will be available to discuss hunt recommendations and answer questions specific to their region.”

Open houses will be held at the Game and Fish regional offices in northern Arizona during the following dates and times:

Pinetop – Monday, Aug. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Region 1 Game and Fish office, 2878 E. White Mountain Blvd., (928) 367-4281.

Flagstaff – Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Region 2 Game and Fish office, 3500 S. Lake Mary Road, (928) 774-5045.

This is the first year, of two, that the spring hunt recommendations are formulated according to the 2010-12 hunt guidelines, approved by the Arizona Game and Fish Commission in September, with amendments in November of 2009.

Part of the updated guidelines revised how spring turkey seasons are set, and how juniors-only spring turkey non-permit tags are allocated, and the open areas for javelina archery-only non-permit hunts.

The main changes from the implementation of the revised hunt guidelines include:

Juniors-only spring turkey seasons are stratified and shortened: The season opens for seven days, then closed for 14 days (during the opening of the general season), and then reopen for 14 more days (simultaneously with general season) for a total of four weeks of juniors hunting opportunity. The 2010 season was five consecutive weeks.

Open areas for juniors-only spring turkey non-permit tag hunts reduced: Game Management Units 1, 4A, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7, 8, 10, 12A and 27 are the proposed open areas for the 2011 season. Units 3C, 6A, and 23 were removed and are proposed to be permitted through the draw based on harvest data.

Open areas for archery-only javelina nonpermit-tag hunts increased: Game Management Units 1, 2A, 2B, 2C, 3A, 3B, 3C, 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B, 7, 8, 9, and 11M, 25M, 26M, 38M, and 47M metro units are the proposed open areas for the 2011 season. Units 1-5 and 7-9 were added to the open areas for over-the-counter hunts.

Both hunt recommendations will be posted and available for downloading from the Game and Fish website on Saturday, July 24. The recommendations will be posted at www.azgfd.gov/huntguidelines.

The Arizona Game and Fish Commission will make a decision on the recommendations on Saturday, Aug. 7, during its regular meeting in Phoenix at Game and Fish headquarters on 5000 W. Carefree Highway, Phoenix, AZ. 85086. For a full agenda, visit www.azgfd.gov/commission under “Meeting Agenda.”
