Payson wants to grow leaders for the future — both in the near term and long term. So, to give those future leaders a well-rounded foundation, the town is offering a Citizen Leadership Academy.
The short application is due today (Friday, July 30) and there is no charge. Participation is limited to 25 individuals and classes start Sept. 7.
The vision of the program is to encourage citizen participation by supporting the development of new leaders representative of the community’s diverse population today and into the future.
The program’s meetings will generally be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Oct. 26.
Participants will learn about town services and the responsibilities of the town council, boards and commissions; gain an awareness of town and community needs and resources; prepare to serve on the council, boards and commissions; and build new relationships.
The curriculum will be informative and interactive and offers the opportunity to learn the complex workings of town government. The planned program includes an opening reception, evening classes, field trips, a graduation dinner and evaluation.
Get an application at town hall, 303 N. Beeline Highway, Payson or contact Gaye Stidham at (928) 474-5242 (press 0) or e-mail gstidham@ci.payson.az.us. The application form is brief and can be filled out at town hall.
Successful applicants will be notified by Aug. 13.
Any citizen residing in Payson may enroll if they are at least 18 or a senior in high school. The program is free due to a partnership between the Town of Payson and APS.

Question of the week
Do you think new Principal Anna Van Zile has a valid idea in eliminating the Asst. Principal and replacing it with an Athletic Director position that would share her duties as Principal?
