The 30th Annual Square Dance Festival is June 11 and 12 at the Tonto Apache Recreation Center. This is also the last year the Zane Grey Twirlers plan to host the event. Membership is dwindling and many of the active members are facing health problems, so the squares and rounds will be silenced after this weekend’s finale. Come watch these talented dancers one more time. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

Kirkpatrick staff in Payson

Staff members for the office of Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick will be hosting open office hours in Payson from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, June 8.

Members of the Congresswoman’s staff will be holding regular office hours at the Board of Supervisors Office, 610 E. Highway 260, the second and fourth Tuesday of every month.

Community rummage sale

The community of East Verde Park is having its annual rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday and Saturday, June 11 and 12, and from 7 a.m. to noon, Sunday, June 13. Everyone is invited.

Community breakfast

Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church is hosting a Community Breakfast at 8 a.m., Friday, June 11 at 507 W. Wade Lane.

Breakfast includes scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, coffee and juice.

Rim Country residents and visitors are invited to join us for food and fellowship. A free will offering will be accepted.

The church will host a breakfast on the second Friday of every month at 8 a.m.

Strawberry Patchers Quilt Show; Strawberry Festival

The 14th Annual Strawberry Patchers Quilt Show will be held June 11, 12 and 13 in the Cultural Hall at the Community Center in Pine. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., admission is $2.

Visitors will enjoy displays of quilts and wearable items for viewers choice voting on Friday and Saturday. Ribbons will be in place for Sunday attendees. Along with the Berry Patch Boutique filled with quality handmade items, a vendor mall and quilt appraisals, the quilters will be selling tickets for their beautiful opportunity quilt. The quilt show is held in conjunction with the Strawberry Festival, which takes place June 12 and 13.

Square dance festival

The Zane Grey Twirlers are sponsoring the 30th Annual Square and Round Dance Festival June 11 and June 12 at the Tonto Apache Recreation Center, southeast of the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino.

Friday night dancers will enjoy pre-rounds with Ernie and Barb Lopez of Prescott at 7 p.m. Then at 8 p.m. the square dancing will start with one of the country’s top callers, Mike Seastrom of Tarzana, Calif.

A pancake breakfast will start things at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 12, followed by a welcome dance. Workshops will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for round dancers, and from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 for square dancers.

Pre-rounds begin at 7 p.m., Saturday, June 12, followed by the Grand March at 7:45 p.m.

Bob Jones will sing the National Anthem and dancers and guests will be formally welcomed by Payson Mayor Kenny Evans. Square dancing gets underway at 8 p.m.

Sprint triathlon

The annual Sprint Triathlon is Saturday, June 12, starting at 7 a.m. at Taylor Pool, North Rumsey Park. Participants will compete in a 500-yard swim; a 15-mile bike ride; and a 5K run. Registration is $50 for individuals and $75 for a team. Participants must be at least 15.

Quilt Show continues

The Strawberry Patchers Quilt Show continues at the Pine Community Center Cultural Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $2 per person.

Payson Farmer’s Market

The Payson Farmer’s Market is at Sawmill Crossing, 816 S. Beeline Highway, in front of the movie theater and behind Chili’s Restaurant. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday through October.

Meet neighbors for coffee and treats; relax and enjoy music of the 1970s and 80s with Roger Williams. Meet the farmers; talk with the vendors.

Mogollon Garden Tour

Tour some of the Rim Country’s prettiest gardens from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 12. In addition to the creativity of gardeners, visitors on the tour will see the works of a number of the Rim’s artists as well.

Tickets for the self-guided tour are $5 per person and may be purchased at the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce at the corner of Highway 87 and West Main, Ace Hardware and Nursery in Payson, Plant Fair Nursery in Star Valley, and at both the Payson and Pine libraries.

Strawberry Festival

The Strawberry Festival will be at the Pine Community Center and feature plenty of family fun. Sponsored by the Pine Strawberry Business Community, the event is free. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, June 12 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, June 13.

Enjoy strawberry pies, sundaes, floats, shortcake, jam, drinks and more, plus fry bread, kettle corn, hamburgers and hotdogs. There will also be vendors offering a variety of goods for purchase.

Workshop on travel writing, photography 

The Rim Country District of Arizona Press Women will have a Travel Writing and Photography Workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 12 at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and is $35 per person. Register by June 8 for $30.

Authors visit

East West Exchange, 100 N. Tonto St, Suite 102, Payson, is hosting Art Russo for a book signing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 12.

Russo will sign copies of his book, “Mexico, Menehunes, Modern Day Prisons & Other Mysterious Characters and Places,” which is a compilation of short stories and poems about Mexico, Hawaii, the Northwest, Arizona prisons and judicial system.

January Jones will sign copies of “Thou Shalt Now Whine” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 25.

Mountain Bike and Strawberry Blues Festival

Rim Country Mountain Bike Festival with The Strawberry Valley Blues Festival is June 12 and June 13 in Strawberry and other locations around the Rim Country

The Strawberry Valley Blues Festival is being held in a meadow up in Strawberry at the end of the pavement on Fossil Creek Road.

Performances begin at 11 a.m. both Saturday, June 12 and Sunday, June 13. Scheduled to appear are Barbara Kerr and Rimshot, The Jump Back Brothers, The John Scott Band, Big Pete Pearson, Chuck Hall Band, Hans Olson, The Blue F.R.O.G.’s, Scotty Spenner, and Old Fiddlers.

Admission is $15 per day for adults and $10 per day for children.

Book signing

Jayne Peace Pyle and Jinx Pyle will be signing copies of their new book, “Payson” by Arcadia Publishing from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 12 at the Rim Country Museum in Green Valley Park, 700 Green Valley Parkway, Payson.

Shop Hop in Pine

Stroll in the shady stretches of Pine and visit merchants participating in the monthly Shop Hop from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, June 12. The shops are on Highway 87 and along Hardscrabble Road.

Tips for Rotarians

Have some fun, a great dinner out and help the Rotary Club of Payson Saturday, June 12.

Rotary Club members will be serving in costume as movie and television personalities at Fargo’s Steak House starting at 5 p.m. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. and for $25 guests can enjoy prime rib, coconut salmon or Tuscan smothered chicken.

Cursillo reunion

The Cursillo community of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will have a reunion at 5 p.m., Saturday, June 12. The church, at 1000 N. Easy St. in Payson, will be hosting an ecumenical reunion (Ultera) for all of the local Cursillo and Walk to Emmaus graduates. The program will start with a “Taize” service followed by a complementary meal provided by the Cursillo Community of St. Paul’s. Everyone is invited to attend.

Concert Under the Stars

The June 12 Concert Under the Stars will feature the country music of Gone Country in the amphitheater area of Green Valley Park at the end of historic West Main Street in Payson.

Vendor booths open at 6 p.m. The free music starts at 7 p.m.

Chili cook-off

The 39th Annual Arizona State Chili Cook-off is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, June 13 at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino. While there is no admission, those who would like to help make the selection for the People’s Choice Award will need to purchase a $5 tasting kit, which includes fry bread. Proceeds will benefit the Time Out Shelter of Payson, which provides housing and services to the victims of domestic violence.

Contestants will compete for a $1,000 first prize for red chili, to be selected by Judge Bob Plager.

There will also be an outdoor bar and arts and crafts booths

Jazz concert

Guitar sensation Johnny Carrasco performs at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 13 at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St.

Appearing with Carrasco will be Sherry Petta, pianist and vocalist; Dave Grale, upright acoustic bass; and Gerry Reynolds, drums.

Carrasco’s professional experience spans more than 30 years. He has worked with many artists, most notably Billy Davis, Marylyn McCoo, Rick James, Cindy Lauper, Tito Puente Jr., Tony Tillman and comedians Bill Cosby, David Brenner and Rip Taylor. Now in Phoenix, Carrasco has been performing with the Reeds (Margo, Francine and Michael), Freddy Duran, Mark Dolan and most recently, L.A. Music Awards Jazz Artist of the Year, Sherry Petta.

The performance is open to the public and sponsored by the Payson Friends of Jazz, and the Community Presbyterian Church. A donation may be made toward the jazz programming expense.
