Five illegal immigrants, including a child, were handed over to immigration officials after a deputy stopped the vehicle they were traveling in for speeding.
The deputy made the stop in the construction zone of Highway 260, 22 miles east of Payson, after he noticed the vehicle speeding in the area of milepost 264.
As the deputy questioned the driver and occupants of the vehicle, he learned none of them had documents to show they were in the U.S. legally and the driver presented a Mexico driver’s license, said Gila County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Tim Scott. Two men, two women and a child around 5 years old were detained and handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. The vehicle was towed and impounded.
