Town Parks and Recreation Sports Coordinator Joseph Harris has resigned to accept a similar position in Los Alamos, N.M.
His final day of work for the P&R department is June 17.
After that date, he will move his family to Los Alamos where he will work as a county recreation coordinator for sports and special events.
During the winter months, he’ll also serve as manager of the county’s ice rink.
“That will be something new. I’ve never done that before,” he said.
The Town of Payson is expected to soon being searching for a replacement for Harris. Until that person is hired, Trails and Outdoor Recreation Coordinator Mary McMullen will take over Harris’ duties, which include supervising and planning all youth and adult sports and recreation activities offered by the town.
Harris says he learned of the New Mexico job offering online and after applying he was offered the position.
“I’m leaving to further my education and for economic stability,” he said. “I will miss Payson, the town has been very good to me and my family.”
Harris, who has been a Town of Payson employee just months shy of three years, describes Los Alamos as a town very similar to Payson.
“The weather and the scenery is very much the same,” he said.
Harris has also resigned his part-time wrestling coaching position at Payson High School.
Head coach Travis Koppenhafer also stepped away this spring meaning the coaching staff will be completely new next season.
The turnover should not affect the success the sport enjoyed last season when the Horns finished second in the state.
“I’m not worried about the program, the new coach (Casey Woodall) will be phenomenal,” said Harris.
