A PRMC health event recently educated seniors on how to deal with stress-related symptoms using inexpensive at-home techniques. Lori Vario, a local licensed massage therapist recently spoke at the Senior Circle giving tips on stress release working from the head down.
Most people have stress-related symptoms in their head, neck and back and Lori shared how much our posture relates to those stress-related symptoms. We don’t realize how many everyday activities unconsciously cause us to roll our shoulders forward. Simple things like driving, working at a desk, cooking over the stove or even reaching for the remote, are all motions that cause stress on the muscles in the neck, shoulders and back.
Lori shared anatomy diagrams showing the natural position of these muscles and gave us a neck stretch exercise that provided immediate relief to many of the attendees. Every day we need to take a moment to relax and stretch our shoulders back setting those muscles back in position and relieving the strain. Mom knew best when she was always reminding us to stand up straight.
Lori showed members how to put two tennis balls in a sock and relieve stress in your neck and back using different techniques standing against the wall. Knee pain was also covered as well as the lower back. Massage therapy is a very good alternative for stress relief and overall wellness. The Lunch and Learn, one of the many Senior Circle free health events educates members about various health-related topics.
The next free event is the Lunch and Learn from 11 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, June 23. Miracle Ear will be making a presentation on hearing loss. The event is free and a light lunch is served. Make a reservation today by calling (928) 472-9290. All Senior Circle programs are sponsored by the Payson Regional Medical Center.
The Senior Circle and Senior Center are losing a valued volunteer at the end of this month. Pat Carr has volunteered her talents the last five years to both organizations. Pat, whose background was in administration, organized the Senior Circle Health Fair, kept track of the volunteer hours and also planned and developed the Branson trip this last May.
Pat recently sold her home in Star Valley and is moving to California to be closer to family.
Her laughter, sense of humor and smile will be greatly missed at both the Circle and the Center. Thank you, Pat, for all your years of service to Payson’s senior community.
