An exhibit commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Dude Fire is now on display at the Rim Country Museum. In conjunction with the new exhibit, the museum is hosting the Dude Fire Memorial Service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 26, which commemorates the 20th anniversary of one of the state’s largest fires. The day’s guest speaker will be Jim Paxon, who will also be signing copies of his books, as will Rim Country historian Stan Brown.

Pine Strawberry Thrift Store

The Pine Strawberry Thrift Store, at 3916 N. Highway 87 in Pine, is having a 50-cent per garment sale on men’s and women’s clothing beginning June 23 — except for anything red, white and blue. Shoes are included in the sale.

The store is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.  

Registration deadline for benefit fly-casting workshop

There will be a fly-casting workshop at Kohl’s Ranch from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, June 24 with Bob Youtz, president of Trout Unlimited.

Register by noon, Wednesday, June 23. To register, call Kohl’s Ranch at (928) 478-4211.

Instruction is from 9 a.m. until noon and creek casting from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The fee is $15 and class size is limited to 15 people. Lunch is not included.

Proceeds will benefit the Trout in Classroom Project.

Barbecue benefit

There will be a barbecue to benefit the re-election effort of Arizona District 5 Senator Sylvia Allen from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 23 at Ramada 5 in Rumsey Park. The suggested donation is $25 per person for hamburgers and all the fixings, barbecue beans, salad, chips, drinks and cookies.

The dinner is hosted by the “Friends of Sylvia Allen” and paid for by the Committee to Elect Sylvia Allen 2010.

Persons attending must have a dinner ticket to receive a meal.

Allen is running for re-election to the Arizona State Senate as a conservative Republican. This event affords an opportunity for fellow conservatives and Republicans to meet and talk with Senator Allen and support her campaign.

Special healing service

Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church, 507 W. Wade Lane, will have a special Service of Wholeness and Healing at 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 23. Physical, spiritual and emotional well being will be the focus of the service. The public is invited to attend.

Z-Coil Shoes

New Z-Coil shoes are on sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, June 25 and Saturday, June 26 in the main lobby of the Payson Regional Medical Center. Styles include sneakers, boots, clogs, sandals and much more.

Proceeds from the sale will go to support the many programs and scholarships offered by the Mogollon Health Alliance Auxiliary.

Enter a pie at Farmers Market contest

The Payson Farmers Market will have the last of the Schnepf Farms peaches this week. There will also be Schnepf Farms plums and apples available for sale.

In the meantime, bake a pie and enter it in the Farmers Market Pie Baking Contest Saturday, June 26.

Awards will be given for taste, appearance and crust and most original, plus a People’s Choice award will be presented.

The entrant must make the pie and only one pie per person will be accepted.

The contest is at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 26.

The Payson Farmers Market is at the Sawmill Crossing, behind Chili’s. It is open every Saturday through October from 8 a.m. to noon.

Health Resource Fair

The Pine-Strawberry Health Resource Fair takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 26 under the ramada at the Pine Community Center. The event is hosted by Dr. Lisa York, S.C.A.F. (Senior Citizens Affair Foundation), the Pine-Strawberry Fire Department, Hospice Compassus and Payson Care Center.

There will be experts available to answer questions, provide resources and administer various diagnostic tests such as blood pressure and oxygen level (both are free), plus diabetes screening; cholesterol level; kidney, liver and cardiac function; and many more for a small fee.

Free parent training

Parent, grandparents, foster or adoptive parents raising or working with pre-teens or teenagers are invited to the Arizona’s Children Association’s free, three-credit training Parenting/Raising Teens — Behavioral Issues and Positive Discipline.

Trainer Ann Clemons will cover a myriad of subjects relating to identity, sexuality, destructive behaviors, health (drugs, alcohol, suicide), coping strategies, redirection and teaching responsibility for teens.

The session is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 26 at the Payson Police Department training room, 303 N. Beeline Highway.

Dude Fire commemoration

A new exhibit on the Dude Fire is now on display at the Rim Country Museum and will be available for viewing for at least a year.

In conjunction with the opening of the new exhibit, the museum is hosting the Dude Fire Memorial Service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 26, which commemorates the 20th anniversary of one of the state’s largest fires.

The day’s guest speaker will be Jim Paxon, who will also be signing copies of his books, as will Rim Country historian Stan Brown.

The museum is in Green Valley Park, 700 Green Valley Parkway. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The museum is closed Tuesday. Admission is $5 for adults; $4 for seniors, 55 and older; $3 for those 12 to 17; and free for those under 12.
