As the end of the school year approached last month, Jessie White received a wonderful surprise. The eighth-grader had been nominated by Rim Country Middle School Principal Gary Witherspoon to attend the National Young Leaders State Conference.

White was nominated for her academic achievement and leadership potential.

The conference, sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, will be held in late September. To attend, White needs to raise $1,500. A portion is due July 9 and July 23, with the balance required by Aug. 20.

She is seeking sponsorships from area businesses and individuals and held a bake sale and raffle June 19. Among those who have contributed to White’s cause are Payson Concrete, Chili’s, Pizza Factory and Big O Tires. She has also received help from individuals, including a special anonymous donor she met at Sears.

White said she expects the conference will give her the opportunity to learn team building, goal setting, communication, self awareness, decision making skills, leadership skills and conflict management.

“I am excited about it all,” White said.

The incoming freshman is looking forward to the expanded academic opportunities in high school and joining the FFA program. While in junior high, in addition to her core classes, White enjoyed drama and art. Away from school she loves working with her horse.

She is the daughter of Jim and Vicki White. Anyone interested in helping her with the financial obligation of the conference may call (928) 595-1519, cell, or (928) 468-6204, home.
