There is wonderful news for Tonto Village this week. If you were listening to KMOG radio on Monday morning, you heard Gila County District 1 Supervisor Tommie Martin talking about the Control Road.
The Control Road starts just off Highway 260 near the turnoff to Tonto Village and goes for many miles to Highway 87 near Pine. Tommie told the listeners that the Forest Service contacted her and told her that the paving of the Control Road was approved. They will start with the first mile and go just past Tonto Village. The residents of the Village have been waiting for this news for a very long time.
Tommie Martin is to be commended for her perseverance in keeping on top of this issue that has been so important to Tonto Village. The residents have been very concerned of the health hazards of getting “dusted” every year. One resident commented ‘“We should have a block party!” Not a bad idea.
There was no start date mentioned, just sometime this spring, so we will just have to keep an eye out for all the equipment to start rolling into the Village.
The Divas had a wonderful surprise when they walked in the door of the Hellsgate Tonto Village fire station last Wednesday afternoon. Not only the president of the Fireflies, Nancy Yoakum, made a surprise visit from the Valley, but we had a double surprise when Annette Godfrey walked in the door. Annette has been on a mission for the LDS Church for the past year. Annette never missed a chance to play dominoes with the girls and she was sorely missed. She did tell us that she has about six more months to go and then she will be playing with the Divas every Wednesday.
Update on the 405A road into Bear Flat: One of the residents reports that the Gila County maintenance crew bladed the road last week. However, there is still a rather large wash that is still quite full and could be dangerous to cross with a small car. Caution is advised in using the road, (the one near Little Green Valley). A high rise vehicle is advised.
The residents wish to thank the Gila County road maintenance crew for grading the 405A road. This road is vital to the residents because the road is their second way out in case of emergencies.
