Saturday’s pristine blue skies and warm temperatures quickly grew cloudy for one Payson man and his dog when the duo found themselves stuck on a rock and without a way down.
The Gila County Sheriff’s Office got a call around 2 p.m. that a 35-year-old man and his mini dachshund were stuck on a rock knob in the Granite Dells area near the former Fox Farm, said Tonto Rim Search and Rescue Commander Bill Pitterle.
Several of the man’s friends had reportedly witnessed the man and the dog scramble up a rock without recognizing they could not come down safely.
When the man realized he could not come down without losing his own footing, much less carrying a a dog, the man waited for help to arrive. Luckily, TRSAR volunteers were just wrapping up rope training in Box Canyon and zipped over to help. Several volunteers hiked up to the man, set up a rope system, attached the man to the anchor and helped him walk off the rock uninjured.
The dog was also safely brought back down to solid ground.
