Free tax help

Payson Community Action Program (CAP) has free tax help available for area residents.

The Payson CAP tax help site is at 107 W. Frontier St., Suite C in Payson. Payson residents can make an appointment by calling Dorine Prine, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed for lunch noon to 1 p.m.) for tax assistance at (928) 474-7192.

“We can help people — especially those who cannot afford paid tax assistance, such as people whose incomes are $50,000 or less, seniors, the disabled and people with English as a second language — prepare and electronically file their 2009 federal and state income tax returns” said Prine, CAP spokesperson.

Payson area residents need to bring: photo identification for themselves (and their spouses), Social Security Numbers or Individual Tax Identification Numbers for each person listed on the tax return, all wage and earnings statements (Forms W-2), interest and dividend statements (Forms 1099 or 1098), a copy of last year’s tax return and any other information concerning income and expenses for 2009. If filing jointly, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.

AARP tax services

AARP will be doing tax returns on a first-come first-served basis at the Elks Lodge, 1206 N. Beeline Highway, every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The AARP Tax Aide volunteers will assist low- to moderate-income individuals or those who are 60 and over with their tax preparation. There is no cost for this service, however, please bring a picture ID, Social Security Cards for all persons claimed on the return, last year’s tax return, your 2009 Tax Documents, and proof of Real Estate Taxes actually paid in 2009 (for the property tax credit).

Head Start enrolling

Head Start is currently enrolling for the 2010-2011 school year. Head Start is a preschool and family referral program for families with low income, and children with disabilities. Families need to income qualify, have a child with a disability or have extenuating family circumstances to be admitted into the program.

This is a government program that serves 3-5-year-old children and does not charge any fees for services. Head Start does not provide transportation, however, many member families volunteer to assist others. Community Presbyterian Child Learning Center collaborates with us and provides transportation to their facility after the morning class.

Needed items for enrollment include: complete and updated immunization record, proof of birth, and proof of income for the year 2009. Once these items are obtained, applicants may call the Head Start office to set up an appointment with a staff member. Once the application process has been completed, the child will be put on a waiting list until an opening is available. Those interested are encouraged to get the needed items for enrollment and call for an appointment, as classes are filling quickly. Classes begin the first week in September

Register for GeoKidz April 1

The next GeoKidz program is Wednesday, April 7; the deadline to register is April 1.

GeoKidz provides a play-based learning environment and nature-centered adventures for elementary-aged children. We use a loosely structured approach that encourages children to explore, builds confidence and competence, and helps children rediscover the joy of playing in a natural environment.

This program will include field trips and hikes to various sites in the Payson area, so children are required to bring good, sturdy walking shoes. Space is limited, so register your child early.

The program is for children in the first through fifth grades and will be held from noon to 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 7 at Rumsey Park Ramada 5. The program will include off-site field trips and hiking, and costs $15 per child.
