Payson High School athletic director Jason Lobik confirmed yesterday, March 29, that Longhorn football coach Matt Mayo has resigned.
“He came in Friday and turned his resignation in,” said Lobik.
Mayo also confirmed he stepped away, but said he did not wish to discuss his reasons until after a meeting today, March 30, with his players.
The former coach’s resignation applies to coaching only and not his PHS social studies teaching position.
Mayo had been at the helm of the Longhorn program for one year posting a 4-6 record last season.
He arrived at PHS last summer with no head coaching experience but, according to his resume, he spent two seasons as a running backs and linebackers position coach at Goodyear Desert Edge High School.
He also was a defensive line and running backs coach at Chandler Seton High School.

Question of the week
Do you think new Principal Anna Van Zile has a valid idea in eliminating the Asst. Principal and replacing it with an Athletic Director position that would share her duties as Principal?
