As if he was wolfing down spinach and tooting his corncob pipe much like his cartoon namesake, Popeye Clay hooked up with Jim Dalgleish to take first place in a Payson Men’s Golf Association two-man best ball tournament held April 28 at Payson Golf Course.
The winning pair carded a 57 in A flight competition to edge the team of Bill Shed and Steve Holes for the tournament title.
In B flight, Jim Livingston and Bob Hendrie finished at 56 and in first place.
Ed Quigley and Steve Vincent posted a 57 to finish second.
In the closest-to-the-pin competition, the PMGA had a rare “no winners” on No. 2.
There were prize money winners on the other par 3 holes including Phil Wagner, No.5, 6 feet, 3 inches; Alex Armenta, No. 8, 4 feet, 8 inches; Phil Scott, No. 14, 3 feet, 9 inches; and Troy Neal, No. 17, 4 feet, 7 inches.
Next up for the PMGA members is a challenging “three clubs only low net flighted” tournament to be played May 12 at PGC.
