It was one and out for the Lady Longhorn softball team in the Class 3A state tournament.
Playing in the first round of the 16-team shootout on May 7 at Rose Mofford Field in Phoenix, Payson was eliminated by a 12-2 loss to Estrella Foothills.
The defeat didn’t send shock waves through the state softball community, mostly because Payson entered the tournament a lowly 15th seed, while Estrella represented a No. 2 seed and the West division champion.
EF proved they were legitimate state title contenders by advancing to the final four with a 6-1 second-round win over No. 10 Florence.
Estrella will play No. 6 Show Low on May 14. In the other semifinal bracket, defending state champion and No. 1 Winslow plays No. 5 Santa Cruz also on May 14.
All that’s left for Lady Longhorn players is to await the announcement of which players will be selected to the All-East team and those seniors chosen to play in the coaches association’s annual North vs. South All-Star game.
