Arizona has two of the most powerful and long-serving senators in Congress: Sen. John McCain, the Republican Party’s last presidential candidate, and Sen. Jon Kyl, who ranks second among the Senate Republican leadership. Therefore, it is disturbing to read Sen. Kyl’s recent Roundup Guest Comment, “Understanding Arizona’s new immigration law,” and to hear him blame it all on the lack of action by the federal government.
To be sure, his conclusion is correct, but I’m reminded of that famous line from the Pogo cartoons: “We have met the enemy and he is us!”
Wouldn’t it be nice if Sen. Kyl used the energy he spends proselytizing his constituents with these columns to join with Sen. McCain to design and introduce federal legislation to deal with the immigration issue? Few people in Congress have more firsthand experience with it than these Arizona legislators.
