Flagstaff, AZ – Forest officials are urging campers headed for northern Arizona and Coconino National Forest to be extremely careful with campfires, as very windy conditions are forecasted for today and throughout the weekend.
Forecasted gusts as high as 55 mph can take small embers from campfires or coals and spread them quickly to create fast-moving wildfires.
Campers and recreationists should never leave a campfire unattended and ensure that it is out “cold to touch” before leaving the area.
“Campers should plan to bring a shovel and plenty of water to extinguish their campfire completely,” said Mike Elson, Peaks and Mormon Lake District Ranger. “The Forest Service is always ready to respond to smoke on the horizon, but it really takes everyone’s vigilance to keep wildfires from beginning.”
