Springerville — Visitors planning to travel to the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests (ASNFs) this upcoming Memorial Day weekend will be happy to know that the forest’s recreation sites have opened for the summer season.
Popular destinations such as Woods Canyon Lake and Big Lake were closed a few weeks ago because of snow and muddy conditions, but they are now open and their facilities are up and running.
In addition, all of the forest roads are now open. Visitors should be aware, however, that some forest roads in the higher elevations may still have snow in the shady areas and/or have wet, muddy spots, and they should use caution when traveling. Also, State Highway 273 (one of the routes to Big Lake) is open, but travelers should expect delays throughout this summer as ADOT will be paving the remaining portion of the road.
While there are no fire restrictions currently in place on the ASNFs, the Forest Service reminds folks to use extreme caution when having a campfire. Specifically, they should never leave their campfire unattended, and they should make sure it is “dead out” before leaving their campsite.
