Gila County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Karen Baltz (left) administers the oath of office to new sheriff’s posse captain, Rick DePhillipis, while Inger Legrande, director of membership, looks on.

At a recent general meeting of the Payson Gila County Sheriff’s Posse, Rick DePillipis was sworn in as posse captain. DePillipis was appointed by the posse board and confirmed at the general meeting.

DePillipis moved to Arizona from California in 1967 where he had taken training at the San Diego Reserve Law Enforcement Academy. When DePillipis moved to Payson, he took a job at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino, where he is now the executive chef and kitchen manager.

Four years ago, DePillipis decided he wanted to give back to the community, so he joined the posse. DePillipis served as the posse’s director of training for two years before becoming captain.
