To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the building that houses their salon, the owners of Body Elegance Day Spa are throwing a birthday party.

On Dec. 4 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., salon owner Shelley Wayland and staff will pay tribute to the historical Stewart House, which was built in 1910.

“Come view the building that won the Arizona State Governor’s award in 2004 for the ‘The Best Rehabilitation of Significance on a Main Street Project,’” Wayland said.

Located on historical Main Street, at 500 W. Main St., the Stewart House is made from the same red sandstone that the former Julia Randall schoolhouse was made of and the Oxbow Saloon.

Each stone measures 18 inches thick. Wayland and her husband Scott took great measures when remodeling the home to display the craftsmanship of the stones, which are held together by mud.

The Waylands remodeled the house in 2003, bringing it back, they say, to its beautiful Victorian luster.

Upon entering the salon, guests step back in time through old photographs of the house taken in 1915.

The Waylands salvaged the original wallpaper from each of the rooms. The wallpaper now hangs behind protective frames.

All of the home’s doors have the original glass door knobs and skeleton key holes, which still work.

In the kitchen, the home’s original owners had the counters covered in tiles from England. The cabinets were made from an old sawmill in town.

The floors in the front room are original and have been restored to a beautiful sheen.

Wayland said as customers dry their nails, they can read preserved Arizona Republic newspapers from 1939 to 1942, which cover all topics of the time including World War II, Hitler and Babe Ruth.

The papers were found after the Waylands ripped up linoleum and carpeting, which were covering the floors. The papers were found on the floor, reportedly used for insulation.

“Just the price of merchandise for sale in the papers are fun to look at,” Wayland said.

Body Elegance Day Spa welcomes all to come and visit this piece of Payson history and to see for yourself its beauty.

The Waylands will serve light refreshments and birthday cake at the “birthday open house party.”

Enter to win a “Day at the Spa,” which includes five of the salon’s services at the party.

For more information, call the salon at (928) 474-2440.

The salon offers spa pedicures, manicures, gel overlays, full body massages, hot rock massages, haircuts and hair coloring.
