Adot Offers Work Zone Advice For Sr 87 Travelers

The Roundup’s recent Oct. 1 story about improvement work along State Route 87 south of Sunflower certainly helps advise Payson area residents about possible delays.

Safety is ADOT’s top responsibility and we wanted to follow up to urge drivers to indeed allow some extra travel time for the trip between Payson and the Phoenix area, especially for northbound traffic on Fridays and southbound traffic on Sundays. It is never easy to recommend a specific amount of time to travel through a work zone like this one.

However, that extra 30 to 45 minutes can help ease any frustration should traffic be slow. ADOT is working hard to deliver important safety features in that area, including shoulder and erosion control improvements and a third climbing lane to enhance southbound travel. Two-way traffic is temporarily sharing the northbound side of the highway.

The project team scheduled the traffic shift to begin after Labor Day weekend for obvious reasons and has established a goal of ending restrictions before next Memorial Day weekend. These safety improvements will be worth it. To request further information or request weekly project updates, please e-mail or call (602) 501-8493.

The story missed a ‘1’ in ADOT’s Travel Information site, which is Please buckle up and use caution in all work zones.

I think it is great that ADOT has scheduled this work between Labor Day and Memorial Day. As a weekend traveler to Rim Country, I truly appreciate the work ADOT is doing to improve the conditions and safety of our roads.

I am also grateful for the efforts they take to minimize disruptions on the big holidays of Labor Day and Memorial Day. Thank you!
