Learn how to pan for gold at the 2010 Gem & Mineral Show hosted by the Payson Rimstones Rock Club this weekend.
The Rimstones are hosting a group from Show Low that will demonstrate gold panning at the 13th annual Gem & Mineral Show Saturday Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 10 at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino Event Center.
The gold panning demonstration is part of a large educational display the Payson rockhounds will have at the show. Another demonstration will show how different minerals have different colors under a black light.
There will be 17 vendors at the show, said Margaret Jones, one of the organizers.
The vendors will be selling such things as fossils, gem stones, specimen minerals, jewelry and the materials needed to make it, as well as lapidary equipment, books and information on where to go rock hunting.
There will be a silent auction and a game for children.
Admission is $3 for adults and children under 12 are free. Discount tickets are available at the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Payson Public Library, the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Office and the U.S. Forest Service Office on Highway 260.
All proceeds go toward supporting scholarships for the graduating seniors from Payson High School, as well as purchasing books and educational materials for all the elementary schools and public libraries.
