Stock up on reading material for the winter at the annual Rim Country Literacy Program Book Sale. The sale is from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 17 at the Senior Circle building, 215 N. Beeline Highway, Payson.

Free early literacy training

A free training session called “Every Child Ready to Read at Your Library” will be held at the Payson School District Office, 920 W. Main St., from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12.

Parents, caregivers, pre-school teachers, children’s programming personnel and library staff will learn how to make the connections between play activities and early literacy skills, as well as get the latest research, practice and hands-on activities that support Arizona’s Early Learning Standards and Head Start Child Outcomes.

The workshop is sponsored by the Gila County Library District and supported by a grant from First Things First.

Holiday ‘adoptions’

The Frybread for Families Committee is preparing for its annual holiday “adoption” program. Members are going to interview families this year as part of the adopting process. Families needing help for the Christmas season need to come and fill out an application between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13 at old restaurant at the the casino. Interviews will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 15. Those participating in the interview process will need to bring a driver’s license and a current utility bill.

Halloween wear

Starting Wednesday, Oct. 13, all Halloween wear in the Pine Senior Thrift Store will be on sale. Store hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The thrift store is in the Community Center in Pine.

Register for next GED test

Space is available for GED testing on Saturday, Oct. 16, but the deadline to register to participate is at noon, Wednesday, Oct. 13. Anyone wishing to take the test must pre-register at 719 S. Beeline Highway, Payson.

The cost is $70 for the complete test. Retakes are $10 per subject.

Future dates for testing in 2010 are: Nov. 20 and Dec. 18.

Writing program

A free workshop for writers and poets will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13. Authors Laurie Wagner Buyer and W. C. Jameson will be at East West Exchange, 100 N. Tonto St., Payson, to share information on successfully writing and marketing novels, poetry, non-fiction and other genres.

At 6 p.m. the same day, both authors will return for a book signing and reading and discussion of their books. There is no charge for either of the events, but advance reservations are advised. For information or reservations, call (928) 468-2435.

Benefit spaghetti dinner

The Greater Payson Moose Lodge will hold a Benefit Spaghetti Dinner from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday Oct. 14 for Carol Bell to help defray funeral costs for her husband, Steve. A donation of $6 per person is requested. There will also be a silent auction and bake sale in conjunction with the dinner. Donations are now being accepted for silent auction. Please bring items to the Moose Lodge in Star Valley or call (928) 474-6212 after 1:30 p.m.

Deadline to register for Quilt Roundup classes

Friday, Oct. 15 is the deadline to register for the quilt classes planned for the 6th Annual Rim Country Quilt Roundup. The event is from Nov. 12 to Nov. 14 at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino Exhibition Hall in Payson. However, the classes start Nov. 11.

Teachers are: Nancy Brenan Daniel, Lyn Mann, Gina Perkes, Sharon Schamber, J. Michelle Watts and Margaret Wood. The classes fill quickly so early registration is strongly advised.

In addition to the classes, the Quilt Roundup will feature a tremendous display of beautiful quilts and the Hoffman Challenge Special Exhibit, plus there will be a vendor mall to stock up on supplies.

The exhibition is from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12 and Saturday, Nov. 13, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14. Admission is $3 per person, or $2 with a donation of non-perishable food for area food banks. Children 12 and under will be admitted free of charge.

Women’s fly-fishing offered

Women’s Fly-Fishing 101 and 102 will be offered by Bob Youtz, local flyfishing instructor, and co-sponsored by Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. Participants will learn the basics of fly-fishing for successful ventures in Payson and around the Rim Country.

The first class in this series focuses on specific fly-fishing history and information.  The second class will include hands-on fly-fishing techniques at Green Valley Lake. 

Registration is being accepted through Oct. 15 for the Oct. 23 class, which is $5 per person, 14 and older, and will be held at the Payson Police Department meeting room in the Town Hall complex, 303 N. Beeline Hwy.
