Payson Women’s Golf Association nine-hole group member Ann Adams opened the month of September as if she was going to dominate play as she had done throughout the summer season.
But after winning the month’s first two tournaments, a low net competition and a low gross contest, the Lady Niners star was shut out.
The September weekly tournament winners were recognized at a luncheon held last week at Payson Golf Course.
In the low competition, Adams outdueled Debbie Nichols and bronze medalist CeCe McCain for the title.
A week later in low gross play, Isabella Sockrider gave Adams her stiffest competition finishing in second place. Nichols was third.
Adams’ twin wins came on the heels of her attaining the pinnacle of success on the PWGA Lady Niner circuit, swinging her way in August to the President’s Cup low net championship.
But back to the Lady Niners’ September play.
On Sept. 16 an “even holes, half handicap” formatted tournament, Donna Larsen took first and Mary Quigley was second. The ever-present Nichols was third.
On Sept. 23, Lady Niners returned to PGC for a fewest putts shoot-out that was won by Anna Alschuler. Karla Thevenot was second and Kelly O’Neill and McCain tied for third.
The final tournament of the month, a scramble, was played Sept. 30.
Debbie Vincent, Flo Moeur and Nichols hooked up to take top honors.
At the awards luncheon, Quigley and Alschuler were acknowledged for their closest-to-the-pin victories.
Alschuler also was recognized for a birdie, as was Linda Teasely. Nancy O’Rourke received a pat on the back for chipping into the cup from well off the green.
The Niners play weekly tournaments, April through October, at Payson Golf Course.
