Celebrating 75 years in the Rim Country, the Payson Community Presbyterian Church is hosting a Fall Festival for the community from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16. Pets will be blessed, children will have fun, the area’s home brewers will share samples of their wares, food will be served, jazz will be played.

Oct. 15 Friday

Church yard sale

The church at Green Valley Park, Payson First Assembly of God, will conduct a huge and prodigious yard sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 15 and Saturday, Oct. 16. The church is located at 1100 W. Lake Drive in Payson.

Attractive, quality items and gently used goods will be on display for sale to raise money for missionaries.

Deadline to register for Quilt Roundup classes

Friday, Oct. 15 is the deadline to register for the quilt classes planned for the 6th Annual Rim Country Quilt Roundup. The event is from Nov. 12 to Nov. 14 at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino Exhibition Hall in Payson. However, the classes start Nov. 11.

Teachers are: Nancy Brenan Daniel, Lyn Mann, Gina Perkes, Sharon Schamber, J. Michelle Watts and Margaret Wood. The classes fill quickly so early registration is strongly advised.

Register for women’s fly-fishing today

Women’s Fly-Fishing 101 and 102 will be offered by Bob Youtz, local flyfishing instructor, and co-sponsored by Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. Participants will learn the basics of fly-fishing for successful ventures in Payson and around the Rim Country.

Registration is being accepted through Oct. 15 for the Oct. 23 class, which is $5 per person, 14 and older, and will be held at the Payson Police Department meeting room in the Town Hall complex, 303 N. Beeline Highway.

GCC registration

Spring semester registration begins Friday, Oct. 15 at Gila Community College.

Classes begin Wednesday, Jan. 12.

Beginning with the 2011 spring semester, tuition charges are waived for students who are 60 or older.

Fire department benefit

The Houston Mesa Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will be hosting its annual benefit with a yard and bake sale. It will be held at the fire department from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16.

Used book sale

The Rim Country Literacy Program’s 11th Annual Used Book Sale is from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 17 at the Senior Circle building, 215 N. Beeline Highway, Payson.

The RCLP’s 11th Annual Used Book Sale is being moved indoors this year, thanks to the Senior Circle, and is being expanded from a one-day to a two-day event. Sunday will be a Fun Discount Day.    

The Book Sale will have a raffle of specially autographed books from bestselling authors inscribed especially for RCLP. Refreshments will be available.

This event is co-sponsored by Thrivent Financial and Payson Senior Circle. Call the RCLP Office (928) 468-7257 for more information.

Craft Fair

The 5th Annual Craft Fair by the Order of the Eastern Star, 200 E. Rancho Road, Payson, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16 and Sunday, Oct. 17. The event features lots of crafters, bake sales, prizes, raffles, and a random drawing Sunday afternoon for prizes. A special food booth will be manned the Masons.

Brush pit schedule

This coming weekend, the Regional Payson Area Project… for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting:

Saturday, Oct. 16 the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson.

Sunday, Oct. 17 the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.

All RPAP free drop-off locations are for brush, leaves, pine needles, trimmings and other vegetative materials only. Properly bagged Yellow Starthistle, or other listed noxious weed species will also be accepted and will be burned. No household garbage, construction debris, or other items will be accepted.

Real estate license renewal

The first in the series of classes to renew real estate licenses will be held beginning Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Payson campus of Gila Community College. The first class is on basic exchange — tax, to be held from 9 a.m. to noon; the second, advanced exchange — tax, is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Classes on agency and disclosure are Saturday, Oct. 23 and the courses in contract law and beneficiary deeds will be Oct. 30.

Cost is $20 per class in advance, or $25 per class on the day of instruction.

These courses satisfy the Arizona Department of Real Estate’s requirements for continuing education hours for all sale and broker licenses.

Benefit quad run

The Rimside Grill is gearing up for the Justice McNeeley Foundation’s 2010 Annual Quad Run, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 16. Registration for the ride begins at 9 a.m. with departure scheduled at 10 a.m. For those participating in the Quad/Poker run, there will be prizes for the best and second best hands. A horseshoe tournament takes place between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Suicide Prevention Awareness Walk

Suicide takes an enormous toll on families, friends and neighbors, leaving communities across the country devastated, including Payson. To help raise awareness of suicides in our community through education, a community walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Green Valley Park in Payson beginning at 10 a.m.; registration is at 9 a.m.

Holiday Boutique, Swap Meet

The Rim Country Republican Club will have a Holiday Boutique and Swap Meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16 at Rumsey Park.

Offering thanks for pets

A Blessing of the Animals will be held at noon, Saturday, Oct. 16 at Rim County Health & Retirement Community, 809 W. Longhorn, Payson.

Sponsored by the Payson Bible Fellowship and Rim Country House Group (non-denomination), the blessing service will be in the patio area of the facility.

Bring restrained pets or their pictures. An offering will be received for the Payson Humane Society.

All of Payson invited

Community Presbyterian Church is celebrating its 75th Anniversary year and welcomes everyone in Payson and the Rim Country to its Fall Festival from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16 at 800 W. Main St.

Rev. Charles Proudfoot will welcome guests and offer a Blessing of Small Animals at 2 p.m., with the Old Time Music Makers providing the entertainment and a children’s area for games and crafts until 4 p.m.

Mission exhibits will be shown with details on the church’s history in Payson as well as several non-profit booths offering their information.

From 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. there will be a Chili Cook-Off; a Beer Garden, featuring local beer brewers’ samples (I.D. will be required); the United Methodist’s Bell Choir and more.

Beginning at 5 p.m. the Payson Jazz Trio will perform and dancing is encouraged. Refreshments will be served.

Jazz concert

The monthly Payson Friends of Jazz concert is at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 17 at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., Payson. The featured artists will be the Pita Jungle Trio, who will have a guest performer as well.

The performance is open to all, and a donation will be accepted. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP if possible to gerryr@cox.net.
