Thomas Ray Reasons, 50, did indeed assault his ailing mother and stab a man who tried to help her after he got irritated when she asked to him come home from a friend’s house in November of 2009, a jury decided on Oct. 8.
The jurors found Reasons guilty of aggravated assault, aggravated assault-domestic violence, threatening and intimidating behavior and criminal damage, said Gila County Attorney Daisy Flores.
The case dates back to a call to Payson police to investigate a stabbing at a local mobile home park in the 900 block of East Granite Dells Road.
Officers found that Reasons had assaulted and injured his mother, who has severe rheumatoid arthritis, in her home after she had asked him to return from a friend’s home where he was drinking and watching football.
Upset with his mother for making him come home, Reasons struck her several times and dragged her through the house.
Reasons also stabbed Terry Brooks in the belly in a different area of the park shortly after assaulting his mother.
Presiding Judge Peter Cahill will sentence Reasons in Payson on Nov. 8 on charges that could yield a 30-year sentence.
Deputy Gila County Attorneys Raymond Geiser and Kyle Mann prosecuted the case.
“The initial investigation conducted by (Payson Police) Det. Michael McAnerny and officers (Billy) Hoffman and (Michael) Hansen could not have been more thorough or professional,” Geiser said.
Reasons’ Attorney Michael Bernays did not return a phone call for comment.
