Big Loss, Little Horns

Custer had a better day at Little Big Horn than the Payson Longhorn football team had at Lakeside Blue Ridge on Friday evening.

Behind gridiron heroics from Winslow transfer Chayse Russell, the undefeated and top ranked Yellow Jackets totally dismantled the Horns (4-4), 54-7. The loss was the third consecutive for PHS.

Russell had a hand in three of the Jacket touchdowns scoring in the second quarter on an 83-yard pass, then recovering a block punt in the end zone and tallying BR’s final score of the game on a 54-yard run.

Westin Gibson scored Payson’s lone TD with about four minutes remaining in the game on a six-yard scamper.

Coach Byron Quinlan pulled off a mild surprise starting Gibson at quarterback over Wade Hunsaker who has been the starter since the onset of the season.

See the Oct. 19 edition of the Payson Roundup for complete game details.
