Behind determined running by senior Westin Gibson, the Longhorn football team improved to 2-0 Friday evening in PHS stadium with a convincing 39-6 win over the Chino Valley Cougars.
After Payson scored on the opening drive to take a 7-0 lead, Chino fought back with a touchdown of its own on an eight play 56 yard drive. But 7-6 was the closest the Cougars would ever get as Gibson and backfield running mate Payson Herring ran over, around and through a porous Cougar defense.
Among Gibson’s feats was a nifty 63 yard run on a counter play that gave the Horns a 26-6 first half lead and erased any doubt which was the superior team.
In other East region games, Round Valley beat St. Johns 20-14 and Snowflake manhandled Holbrook 35-6. Top five ranked Show Low and Blue Ridge were idle.
Mingus, the Horns’ opponent next Friday, blasted the Prescott Badgers 40-6.
