Buying insurance, especially if you are a business owner, can be a daunting experience.
Figuring out how much coverage you need to cover potential damages is confusing and it can be hard to know if an agent is giving you honest advice.
Tim Matthews, the newest senior associate at Crabdree Insurance and Financial Services, Inc., said beyond insurance, he sells service.
With decades of experience in the business, Matthews said he has seen other less experienced agents sell businesses a basic policy to keep costs low, but that fail to cover sufficient damages.
“The most important thing is getting what you need — not too much and not too little,” he said.
Unlike a captive agent who represents only one insurance company, Matthews is an independent agent and is able to select policies from a variety of companies.
This allows him the opportunity to research and find a custom designed policy that best matches a business’ needs.
Finding the right policy is critical because it must cover a variety of risks, including property, liability, auto and workers’ compensation.
“What is great about Crabdree is we can pull from 30 insurance companies,” he said. “Would you go to a doctor with only one pill in his bag? Would you go to an insurance company that represents only one company?
“We can find a fit, but they can really only sell price.”
Beyond a good price, Matthews said insurance coverage has to be balanced with coverage and service.
“If you are a smart buyer, you get all three,” he said.
Matthews started with Crabdree in July after finding himself bored in retirement.
“I came out of retirement to have some fun,” he said.
Before retiring, Matthews worked for Marsh McLennan, one of the world’s largest insurance brokers.
Matthews said he handled Fortune 1000 accounts, but is now working primarily with restaurant, bar and tavern owners.
Although Crabdree offers home and auto insurance, Matthews is focused on insurance for commercial and industrial business owners.
